RMBC97JE–ROCHDALE PIONEERS who founded the first retail Cooperative movement in 1844
RM2H06TYH–1950s, exterior of a local Co-Operative shop, Wheatley, Oxford, England, UK, built in 1913 and owned by the Oxford Co-Operative and Industrial Society Ltd. The British Co-Operative movement, known as the Co-Op, started with the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers in 1844, a commerical enterprise run for the benefit of its members, who would receive a dividend from profits. Around 300 individual Co-Operatives in the North of England become the Co-Operative Wholesale Society (CWS), an organisation supplying their members own stores with products made in their society's factories.
