Square Enix said on Friday that Front Mission Evolved, an action-packed game that puts players behind the controls of giant heavily-armed robots, will be released in the U.S. this spring for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

The faction of gamers who bemoaned the closure of Sega's Chromehounds servers ought to be jazzed about this news. Front Mission Evolved promises robust online battles that allow players to fight solo or in teams with their customized Wanzers (that's Square Enix for 'robots').

The losers in this announcement are turn-based tactics fans. The Front Mission series has always relied on old-school, grid-based battles. Front Mission Evolved casts off the shackles of role-playing rules for fast paced third-person shooter action.
