Meg Ryan is reclaiming her place as queen of the romantic comedy. The first trailer for What Happens Later just dropped, and it's already shaping up to be the movie I'm going to cry hardest at this holiday season.

Here's everything we know about the new film, which Ryan also directed.

What is What Happens Later about?

Ryan will star as Willa opposite David Duchovny as Bill, her former partner with whom she unexpectedly finds herself trapped at the airport during a snowstorm. The two haven't seen each other in two decades but pick up right where they left off: arguing about what went wrong between them. The trailer doesn't reveal much beyond that, but we do catch a glimpse of Bill talking about “anticipatory anxiety” and Willa cracking jokes about their forced reunion being her “worst-case scenario.” The two continue to hash and rehash their breakup until both finally admit how much they really did love each other. Sigh!

Is there a trailer?

The first full-length trailer was released on August 30, and features Meg Ryan wearing a deliciously Meg Ryan outfit.

Who’s in it?

Meg Ryan isn't just the film's leading lady. She also directs, and she cowrote the screenplay, which is based on Steven Dietz's play Shooting Star. Per the movie's synopsis, What Happens Later was made to recapture the “cheeky magic” of Ryan’s ’90s rom-coms.

“Sometimes there's a question of: Will they be together? Will they not be together?” Ryan told Entertainment Weekly in an interview conducted prior to the actors strike. “For that reason, [What Happens Later] sort of evolves the rom-com genre just a little bit. It's also about old people, and it's still romantic and sexy.”

“My character, Willa, is a magical thinker and David's character, Bill, is a catastrophic thinker,” she added. “These rom-coms really work when the two characters are somehow opposites and yet have a rhythm of intellect and humour and dialogue and banter that sort of indicates their compatibility. So it's just been really fun to see David embrace this guy who I don't think is anything really like David. Whereas the Willa thing I can really relate to. To see him dive into every single scene in the fullest way, he's funny, and he's smart, and he's dear, and irresistible."

When will What Happens Later premiere?

What Happens Later is headed to US cinemas October 13. The UK release date has yet to be announced.
