Star Trek's Zachary Quinto has been cast in upcoming NBC medical drama Wolf.

The actor will play the lead role of Dr Wolf in the series, according to TVLine, which will be based on neurologist Oliver Sacks' books, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and An Anthropologist on Mars.

Quinto's character, who's the head of neurology at Bronx General Hospital, has been described as an "obsessive genius".

The series will see him join forces with a group of interns as he attempts to explore the last great frontier of the human mind, while also dealing with relationship and mental health issues.

"He's drawn to people that society has deemed ‘other’ and helps them find hope and purpose. He embraces differences rather than suppressing them," the character outline added.

An hour-long pilot for the series is currently being written by Riverdale's Michael Grassi, with director Lee Toland Krieger and executive producer Greg Berlanti. Further details of the project are yet to be announced.

Quinto was most recently seen in American Horror Story: NYC last year, his first appearance in the horror anthology series since 2012's Asylum.

The actor is probably best known though for his roles in the NBC science fiction series Heroes and for playing Spock in the 2009 film Star Trek. Quinto also appeared in the subsequent sequels Into the Darkness (2013) and Beyond (2016) alongside Chris Pine (Captain James T Kirk) and Karl Urban (Leonard McCoy).

Last year, Quinto weighed in on the prospect of a fourth outing for the saga, telling The Hollywood Reporter he didn't know when the project would go ahead.

"I don't know that we will do it this year. I don't know when it will happen. And I always maintain that I would love to do it. But until I get something concrete – 'We're shooting this day, here's your script, get ready' – I'm in a wait and see pattern," he said.
