141st G-View: Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai

Hey doods and peeps. Welcome to another episode of The G-Views. I honestly have no idea how to feel about this one. I’ll try my hardest not to completely bash this show to dust. This is Boku wa Tomodachi Sakunai.

Alternate title: I don’t have many friends.

Genres: comedy, romance

Themes: afterschool club, Ecchi, Harem, school

Number of episodes: 12

G-Rating: 7/10

Plot Summary: Hasegawa Kodaka is a recent transfer student to St. Chronica’s Academy, a Catholic high school. As with every other school he has ever attended, he finds it difficult to make friends there because of his naturally-blond hair and fierce-looking eyes, which make him look like a dangerous “yankee” to his prejudiced schoolmates. One day, Kodaka accidentally comes across the equally solitary and very abrasive Yozora Mikazuki while she converses with her imaginary friend Tomo. Realizing that neither of them have any social lives, they decide that the best way to improve their situation is to form a club: the Neighbor’s Club precisely intended to make friends and learn social skills.

What can I say about this show? It isn’t great but not bad either. The plot doesn’t really matter. It’s just a group of girls and 1 guy doing stuff together in the hopes f learning the secrets to making friends…without realizing they’ve already made friends…each other. Oh, and there’s a love triangle for those who are interested I guess. That’s it. Most of the episodes have classic events such as the beach, yukata night, meet the parents, video game time, etc. “Spoiler alert”, all the events fail to teach them anything but it does obligatorily show us more about the characters’ personalities as it should since this is a character driven show after all. Having said that, there WAS one episode that made me roll on the floor laughing my butt off and that was the cell phone sketch. Male lead and Yozora acted like they had discovered a whole new world, or they’ve emerged from a dark and spooky cave where technology is  a century behind. It was magnificent.

Animation: not much to say here. The characters and their facial expressions are simple, yet effective. At first the show’s style reminded me of a Shaft project but it quickly stopped being such and had a style that feels familiar but I can’t put my finger on it.

Music: It’s okay. The OP and ED are okay and the soundtrack’s okay, just like the rest of the show.

Characters:

I’m going to try something different with this character rundown by listing each of the girls from worst to best in my eyes. As for my thoughts on male lead…he fulfills his role as the guy of all the girls’ affections, like any other harem lead should do. He’s alright, doesn’t do anything extraordinairy and comes complete with a lonely siblings’ back story.

Maria: I’d like to end my thoughts on this girl by saying she’s a waste of flesh and should be taken to solitary confinement and locked there for all eternity but that’s not enough to explain why she’s my least liked character. She’s A nun with a brain that would insult most girls her age if they even looked at her. Believe me, there’s NO GIRL ALIVE ON THIS PLANET WHO ISN’T MENTALLY RETARDED THAT CAN BE THIS STUPID! Basically what the writers are telling us is that little religious nuns who have been secluded from the human world for so long, lack so much common sense and are so gullible that it practically makes her have the mind of a 2 year old in a 10 year old girl’s body. Don’t make me laugh. I don’t care if she has a tragic back story in the manga or something because I’ll never like this insulting runt. Thankfully her stupidity is lessened after “Ku.Ku.Ku” joins the club and she spends most of her time clinging to Male lead or feuding with “Ku.Ku.Ku.”

Rika: a scientist who’s both a super genius and a wannabe slut who yells random stuff when she “orgasms”. Hey writers, MM! wants their dork back! I don’t care how many otakus were amused by her antics, I don’t find horny bitches funny. Hard core novelists yes but not horny bitches who wear labcoats. Her only two noteworthy accomplishments are, making a Mecha manga battle erotic and making the Virtual Boy playable. Other than those two accomplishments, she’s another waste of flesh.

Yozora: A cruel and selfish black-haired girl who says she understands and respects bullying but resents being called a bully herself, Yozora’s difficult personality drives away anyone who might wish to make friends with her before she meets Kodaka. She is physically abusive towards, and often argues with, Sena and manipulative towards Maria, who she cons into giving up an empty room for the use of the Neighbor’s Club, and Yukimura, who she fools into working for the club as a crossdressing cosplay maid. The only person she can’t insult is Rika, as Rika takes whatever insult she gives her and deflects it back with a dirty joke that leaves her tired – to the point where she just does what Rika says (like cross-dress for example) rather than argue.

If you like type-A tsunderes, you’ll love this chick. That is all. She does what she does very well.

Too bad Yozora never wears this swimsuit on the show.

Yukimura: First introduced as a stalker of Kodaka. “His” first meeting with the Neighbor’s Club resulted in gender confusion, as “his” appearance is decidedly feminine despite “his” assertions of malehood (which are ultimately shown to be false). A gullible student with low self-esteem, she admiringly believes Kodaka to be a romantic and masculine criminal who lives life the way he wants to, and eagerly pledges to become his underling on the basis that she can learn to become less effeminate through him; however, she also appears to harbor a crush on Kodaka. She fittingly[clarification needed] refers to Kodaka as “aniki”. She tends to do everything Kodaka says to the extreme; when Kodaka asked her to bring Maria something healthy to eat; she brought a protein shake and tried to force it down Maria’s throat until she finished it all.

She’s another character who does what she does well, being a sad panda on screen. She’s my 3rd least annoying character. Oh and if she really is a guy, then I’m the one who will single handledly save the Internet from SOPA’s wrath…

Ku.Ku.Ku.: Real name, Kobato Hasegawa: Kodaka’s (Male lead) younger sister; she is a student in middle school, but nonetheless joins the club. She is very close to her brother, who she calls “An-Chan”, and behaves in a jealous and clingy way whenever she feels that he is not giving her the attention she deserves, to the point where it is obvious that she has a brother complex. She sees Maria as a rival for Kodaka’s brotherly affections and so often gets into fights with the latter.

She has a penchant for darkness, vampires and the macabre ever since she started watching an anime called Full Metal Necromancer. As a result she often speaks in an affected fashion, and claims to be known as “Reisys VI Felicity Sumeragi”, an ancient vampire who has lived for ten thousand years, but this façade quickly breaks down when she gets emotionally worked up and she speaks in a strong Kyūshū accent.

Ku.Ku.Ku.’s my 2nd least annoying character primarily because of her fascination with darkness and her dialogue when in character. Unfortunately, like Maria, Ku.Ku.Ku. is also lolicon fap bait. Ugh. Anyway, I call her Ku.Ku.Ku. because that’s how she usually begins a conversation when in character, with a dark chuckle.

Last but not least, the girl I actually do like and to no one’s surprise, it’s Sena.

Sena: The wealthy blonde daughter of the school’s headteacher, Sena shows a dislike of all things “ordinary.” She is both attractive and academically successful, but her resulting arrogance leads her to be disliked by her female peers. Their admiration eludes her, much as she desires it; she treats her male classmates only as servants to be used, although many of them would like to be her boyfriend. Nonetheless, she holds Kodaka to a higher standard. Kodaka concludes that she is the weirdest member of the club, as she is able to warrant weird and disgusted looks not only from Yozora and Kobato, but also from Yukimura and Rika.

She enjoys playing video games, including dating sims and eroge, partially because they allow her to make female (if virtual) friends. She is generally fascinated by the girls in these games and has also taken a liking to Kobato. Yozora calls her “Meat” (肉 Niku), an insulting nickname which she secretly likes because it is the first she has ever received.

The main reason I like her isn’t because she’s an ojou-sama, a type-B tsundere or busty, it’s because of LL the girls in the group, she’s the one who’s trying hardest f all to make friends, factual or otherwise. She always has arguments or duels with Yozora where she often loses the former and wins the latter, much to Yozora’s denial and dismay. She’s the only character I actually enjoy watching because she can be somewhat adorable…and majorly passionate towards her likes, such as Ku.Ku.Ku. for being the imouto she’s never had.  Nice lass.

In conclusion: Not a bad show I must admit but personally nothing memorable. Ku.Ku.Ku.’s antics and Sena are what really save this show for me. I suppose others enjoyed this much more than I did and that’s fine. For everyone else,  a safe watch, give it a go when you feel like it.

“Too bad Yozora never wears this swimsuit on the show.” <- I was baffled by Yozora's choice really. It's the first time I saw anyone picking that style of swimsuit in anime.

I agree with you on Haganai – it's nothing really special. It did however make me laugh in a few occasions like the cell phone incident you mentioned and also Yozora's ghost story. Other than that, mediocre.

The zebra swimsuit she went with made sense and kinda matches her semi “closed off from the world” type personality. The T-swimsuit she has in the pictures is sexy though.

Ah, Yozora’s ghost story, that’s a good one for sure. I don’t know what kind of impact the ending will have but I doubt it’ll influence me to change the rating.
