THE MEANING OF
CHRISTMAS
Nlnc- Iiftcen, the day before Christma s
waken. First one of my eyes drowsily
opened, and afte r a p,I\I5e, the other followed
its CX;IIll) l !c rel uctantly. Leaping
witnessed :t wrigKling motion at the [001
corner and like lightning d isappeared
under the warm covers ;Igain , '(,Ilsing the
cold ness or the air. From dcwnsrnirs. the
rapturous strains of some Christmas musk
came wafting- through the half- opened
door. :\1)' heavy eyeli d s dropped soundlessly
as thoughts of the gay morrow
miugled with "Noel". r rouhl sec the
'pri/{htly deccmted tree blin king its lights
0 11 an d nlf and St. Ni rk slc;I]ing 10 the
stairs. Alread y my sister was purri ng up
holly an d sprigs of mistletoe around the
rooms, while mom was pl anning a cent repiece
for th e table . Afle r a hurried breakfast,
I put my hand to decorating the tree.
Excitement and an unexpla inable sense of
joy sett led inside me as I toyed with the
gai ly twin kling ornaments. With a sigh of
contentmen t, I placed the final bulb 0 11
th e tree and went ou t to do the last minute
shopping. I joined the bustling crowd
from time to time as 1 hopped from store
to store. Ncar dusk, I ret urn ed home tired
but satisfied with my load of purchases.
Before me b y a leisurely evening of wra p
ping them and listening to th e carols that
would be pl ayed on the radio.
As I thought abo ut the sno w r was
hoping would fall, I heard the peal of
church bells in th e distance. T ears welled
in my eyes. T he snow, San ta Claus, and
the turkey mattered no longer. How shallow
J had been , to be th inking of the
singing, dan cing and merr ymaking of the
season, comple tely forgett ing the true
meaning of Christmas. Quickly putt ing on
foot of it placing a prettily trimmed box
underneath - for me rerhaps? A savory
aroma crep t up the sta irs and a steaming
brown turk ey danced before me garnished
by spr igs of parsley and cranberry sauce.
Nuts, p lum pudding and cake followed, all
add ing to a perfect meal.
Mother's sharp voice rang through the
room shattering my radi an t visions in to
thousa nd s of p ieces. Despite the frigid
temperature of the room, I dragged myself
our of bed, patted my face with cold water,
threw on my clot hes and dashed dow n the
my hat and coat, I hurried Out of the door.
The cool night air that met me dried my
tears as I ran down the dimly-lit streets
to the church. w hen I entered, the choir
was softly cha n ting a. hym n; all was calm.
T he spicy incense that drifted around the
cosy chu rch captured me in a warm embrace.
Suddenly the things that had seemed.
so im/, orrant before faded from my mind.
I hac found a uew conteurmeut, a new
excitement: I had found the true meaning
of Ch ristmas.
THE SHEEP DOG
TRIALS
Then the announcer's voice came over
the loud ~pt: aker. "And the last con testant
is Bob, trained by Bill Du ncan of Falkland,
Fife".
A m in ut e la ter l\ill and the collie entered
the field . In the rar end five sheep
hudd led together. feebly bleating. A pen
occu pied the cent re of lhe field. its R"tC
stood open. Bill knelt down beside: his
loyal compan ion to whisper :I few words
of encouragemen t. and to p:u him on the:
back. Bob's alert, brown eyes scanned the:
ere ....-d. Then he: trotted slowly to the
other COTner of the: field.
By this time, most of the farmers had
left the: other attractions on the grounds
10 come and watch these sheep-dog uials.
for only champions were: entered in th is
contest. T he dour farmers, standing at the
edge of the: field. purred on the ir pipes.
shrewdly sized up the oth er dogs, and
speculated as to Bob's chances, for Bob
had never bee n exh ibited before. T he
women stood chauering away about the
cooking and $ewing con tests, \"hile the
children were admiring and stroking the
d"".
The judges ~ve the signal. and the
trials ~ n . With his sleek body held
erect, Bob trotted over to the sheep and
slowly started to drive them up field, to.
ward the open p te of the pen. Next he
had to single OUl a sheep, and drive it to
the other side of the field. T his he aha
did expertly, dart ing here and there until
the deed wu accomplished.
Now came the most d iHicult task of allto
.\.I"parate three marked sheep from the
Flock, and dri ve them in to the P('I1. At a
signal from his master, Bob glided towards
them. All eyes were on him as he separated
and drove off the mar ked sheep one by
one. Suddenly, the obstinate beings darted
off in several di rections, bur Bob, like an
arrow, shot around them, quietened them
by cro uching from tim e to time, and slowly
brought them closer to the pen, J uS[ as
th ey were about to enter the gate of the
pen crashed to the ground. This terri fied
the simple crea tu res, and they darted off
in another d irection , The job had LO be
started all over again, but Bob managed
to achieve his aim just be fore the whistle
of the judges W ;lS blown,
Excited chaner broke out in the crowd.
All were waiting for the final decision ,
and :t hush fell ever them ; .~ ttu- announcer's
upheld the tradition of past oper eu;ls.
Among the male leads, Atuhony Grey
played the role of the father, ~ l:Ij o r Oeneral
Stanley extremely well as was expec ted
or him. H is wonder ful acting ahil hy resulting
fro m his experience with the Em'l
ope retta. Jon Wilkins was his und erstud y.
Fortunately for \IS versaul... Hob Curran
was on hand to pl ay the role of Frederick,
the 10\'1'1'. Blon d Dave Harve y played the
all important Pira te King whi le Uoh Wic k·
nob was so natura l and at hom e in this
role that his humorous gestures kept the
audience laughing. Bob Pedherney as
Samuel the lleutenaru, added gaiety \0 the
ridiculous plot. T hese were our gorgeolls
male leads.
Ou r female leads were just as oUlstaml·
ing. Joyce Cairn s with her rk h voluminous
voice played the role of Ruth, the nurse.
Andrea Hansen who {or the last four yean
has been a valuable member of the operet·
ra orchestra , shared the same role. Bcncr
than ever was Marie Peaker as the heroine,
:\Iabel. xrarte is very talen ted in musi,'
and this year she displayed her ability in
her singing. Equally talented in the same
role was pert Barbara Kirkham who
amazed the audience when her sweet voice
rang throug h the auditorium.
In the operetta this year, there were
llIan y young leads. Kay Md lhaggart and
