Rescued piglet finds a new home

The Humane Society of Louisiana says a piglet was rescued during carnival after they say people were tossing it around.

METAIRIE, La. — Good news for a little piggy who was abandoned on Mardi Gras day. The Humane Society of Louisiana says a piglet was rescued during carnival after they say someone saw people tossing the piglet around.

He goes by Piglet, according to the Humane Society of Louisiana, Piglet was rescued on Mardi Gras day by Washington Square on Frenchman Street. Jeff Dorson with the agency says a bystander saw people throwing the pig around like a football.

Dorson said, "A group of men, were seen tossing what they thought was a Nerf ball to a bystander, the bystander came closer and realized it was a baby pig."

Piglet was brought into the Metairie Small Animal Hospital, Vet tech at the hospital Emma Beach is fostering Piglet, Beach says, "He is the cutest, cuddliest little thing, I think he deserves a nice place to live out the rest of his life happily."

He went on to say, "He is about nine pounds right now, full grown he should be about 80 pounds or so."

Dorson says since Piglet's rescue, two other people have come forward saying they too were handed pigs, he said the other pigs were handed out at the "Same location, same period of time, described the same group of people, so it's all the same story."

The vet says Piglet is around six weeks old, by eight weeks, he will have his final vaccinations and he'll be going to his forever family.

Piglet suffered no injuries, so with his wet nose and stringy hair, he's happy frolicking in the grass ready to go to his forever family.

Beach said, "He was pretty healthy, he was a little frightened, emotionally/mentally, physically he was in really good condition."

State Representative Lauren Ventrella from East Baton Rouge has adopted Piglet, she said in a statement, "I can confirm I will be adopting Piglet. I run a 14-acre farm we affectionately dubbed the “Futile Farm.” We have one pig, 11-year-old Winston, who will be getting a little brother. When I heard Piglet’s story and his plight as a mistaken Mardi Gras throw, I knew he belonged on my farm and that he deserved a better life. I ran for the legislature to be a voice for those who are most vulnerable, and Piglet’s story is a good reminder to always be kind, even to the least of these."

NOPD says the pig was rescued by good samaritans, with no police involvement. NOPD would not confirm if any other piglets were handed out on Mardi Gras day.
