PROVINCETOWN, Mass. (WPRI) — Cape Cod Bay has welcomed its first calf of the year.

Two right whales, a mother and calf, were spotted just north of Marshfield on Monday, according to the Center for Coastal Studies.

The mother, whose name is Legato, gave birth to the calf in December, and the pair was first seen on New Year’s Eve by Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute.

North Atlantic right whales calve off the southeastern U.S. coast in the winter before migrating up north. They are a critically endangered species, so spotting a whale and her calf is always a relief, according to Center for Coastal Studies Aerial Observer Ryan Schosberg.

Right whale mothers and calves are often spotted in Cape Cod during the months of April and May.
