NEW YORK — Sam Bankman-Fried’s initial appearance on the witness stand in his own trial saw the former crypto executive offer testimony that sometimes seemed to frustrate the judge who will decide whether jurors can hear it.

“The witness has what I’ll call an interesting way of answering questions,” U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan said at one point.
