Update, 7:26 p.m.: A representative for Jenner said, “The quote was taken out of context. Mid-thought she realized the number of shows some models walk a season is closer to 80. The point was that it’s their path and ‘the more power to them.’ She admires their hard work and dedication. It’s an accomplishment.”

The original story continues below.

Kendall Jenner’s title as a capital S Supermodel has been debated since it was bestowed upon her. While she’s racked up plenty of accomplishments during her brief career, including Vogue covers, coveted ad campaigns, and status as a designer darling, many of her peers have criticized her rise as a product of nepotism and privilege. Her latest comments haven’t helped to repair that image.

In a now-deleted post on Instagram by Love magazine, the model was quoted as saying, “Since the beginning we’ve been super selective about what shows I would do. I was never one of those girls who would do like 30 shows a season or whatever the fuck those girls do. More power to ’em. But I had a million jobs, not only catwalks but everything else. The whole combination was very overwhelming and I started to freak out a little bit and needed to take a step back.”

Several models were quick to to respond to Jenner’s “those girls” comment. Irina Djuranovic wrote on her Instagram stories, “Never been so indirectly and publicly offended in entire life god damn!” Daria Strokous corrected Jenner, writing, “‘ . . . whatever the fuck those girls do’ is do their very best to make their way up AND try to make some money so that they can provide for themselves and their families,” adding, “Oh and it’s 70 shows a season by the way and we all are fucking proud of every single one of the girls that did it.”

Jenner has previously opened up about stepping back from the runway, with her family’s reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians documenting her anxiety back in February. At the time, a source told People, “Kendall always decides last minute what she is walking in. It depends on the money and how she is feeling.”
