Vaccinium angustifolium is a small shrub often about 30 cm tall, with simple, alternate, finely-toothed leaves which are usually 2-4 cm long and about 30-50% as wide. Flowering occurs in May and June and fruits persist through the summer. There is wide variation in color of leaves and fruits.
