U.S. PARMA 2015 COLLEGE I.D. CAMP

The second annual U.S. PARMA College I.D. Camp started Monday and is in full swing. Each day a different college coach comes in to work with the players on a specific field topic. Coach Heather Barclay of Queens College (D2) started things off with a session built around the ball skills of passing, receiving and finishing. Coach Dave Farmer of FDU-Madison (D3) worked on defending on Tuesday while Coach Katie Feehan of New Jersey City University (D3) will introduce possession in the middle third of the field Wednesday. Coach Jim Moore of Georgian Court (D2) wraps up the week Thursday with finishing.
At the end of each session the guest college coach holds a brief question and answer discussion with the players about college soccer and the recruiting process. We are grateful to each of these coaches for coming to work with our players, and we're excited to now have this camp as part of our U15-U18 program. U.S. PARMA president Phil Iuliano said, "Thanks to the players who were able to participate and thanks to the College Coaches for the work and instruction provided. The curriculum, exposure, insight, and discussions were top notch. Looking forward to hosting the camp again next year."

Michael J. Wielgus II Foundation Second Annual Golf Outing

The Michael J. Wielgus II Foundation, established in memory of Michael "Wiggy" Wielgus, offers its global mission to contribute to the advancement of research for a cure for pediatric cancers as well as support to the community: to families of children fighting cancer and through scholarship awards to local graduating high school seniors.

This past year the MJWII Foundation awarded five scholarships to graduating high school seniors. Plans for the upcoming year include additional scholarship awards, donations of meals to families staying at the New Jersey and New York Ronald McDonald Houses and an opportunity to meet the need of a child in treatment at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

This year we are hosting the 2nd Annual Golf Outing. We thank you for your tremendous support last year and hope you can support us again this year.

Michael J. Wielgus II Foundation Awards Scholarships

The Wielgus Family and the Michael J. Wielgus II Foundation are honored to award scholarships to U.S. PARMA players, who are graduating in the 2015 class. As many of you know, Michael lost his courageous battle and left us much too soon. Our lives will never be the same. As we struggle with living our lives without him, we search for ways to keep his memory alive. We thought about what meant the most to him and how he would want to be remembered. The U.S. PARMA family was something that Michael treasured greatly. Honoring him with these scholarships is something our family is proud of. This year's recipients of the MJW II scholarship are Ryan Connors (U18 Boys Cavaleri Team) and Amanda D'Alessandro (U18 Girls Liberta Team). LEONESSE CAPTURES PA CLASSICS MID ATLANTIC CUP CHAMPIONSHIP

The U.S. PARMA U15G Leonnesse traveled out to Lancaster, PA for their first appearance at the PA Classics MAC Showcase. The girls won their first game 5-0 against the Maryland Rush on Saturday. After a thunder/lightning delay they dominated the second game but came up short in a 3-2 loss the Altoona United of western PA. Saturday evening the Leonesse enjoyed a BBQ at the hotel with the U16G Tempesta and the U17G Vittoria and all the families and coaches of the three teams. The Sunday morning semi-final with FC Carolina Elite of SC was an exciting game with back and forth action, and the Leonesse had plenty of chances to score including a break into the penalty area with about 5 seconds remaining in the game, but the clock expired with a 1-1 draw and it was on to penalty kicks. The Leonesse put all 5 chances into the back of the net and came up with a huge stop of an FC Carolina attempt to win 5-4 to advance to the Finals against the PHWM Warriors of Maryland. Moving on to a turf field for the championship game, the Leonesse dominated in possession especially in the first half. The teams traded some scoring chances with the Leonesse hitting the post twice and putting a few just over the crossbar, but in the end it was 0-0 and back to the penalty kick shootout! After 5 shots it was 4-4. The 6th shooters for each team scored and on shot #7, the Leonesse buried it then came up with a save to win the shootout 6-5 for the championship win. The team persevered through hot, sticky weather and some stiff competition to take home the impressive championship hardware.

U.S. PARMA Partners with the LUSO Soccer Academy to Field PDL Team

The U.S. PARMA Soccer Club and LUSO Soccer Academy have successfully negotiated a partnership to promote soccer in central and north Jersey. LUSO Soccer Academy owns a PDL franchise here in NJ. The top level of soccer, of course, in the United States is the MLS (Major League Soccer). Beneath the MLS is the USL (United Soccer Leagues). The USL governs the USL Pro League (sometimes called the A League), the PDL (Premier Development League), the MISL (Major Indoor Soccer League) and the W-League (Women's Pro-Am Soccer) as well as the Super 20 and Super Y Leagues. PDL players, therefore, are only two steps away from the MLS. Just weeks ago 7 PDL alumni suited up for the US Men's National Team 2-1 loss against Honduras. In the recent MLS Superdraft, 26 PDL alumni were selected by MLS teams including 7 of the Top 10 draft picks! Another 42 PDL players were taken in the Supplemental Draft. NJ LUSO-PARMA (new team name) will be one of only four PDL teams based in NJ playing in the Mid Atlantic Division of the nationwide league.

Playing as the NJ Rangers FC since 2010, the team compiled an 8-5-3 record last year finishing 4th in the 10 team division. Head Coach Carlos Rasoilo hopes to build on that success in 2013. Luso Soccer Academy, Inc. also has affiliation with S.C. Beira-Mar, a Premier Sagres League team from Aveiro Portugal, to showcase soccer talent from the PDL Team. In July 2011, coaching staff arranged a tryout session for PDL's Dominic Reinold, Rookie of the Year Runner-up in 2010 season. Because of this tryout, Reinhold had the opportunity to demonstrate his soccer abilities and signed a professional contract for two years with S.C. Beira-Mar. S.C. Beira-Mar will work in conjunction with Luso Soccer Academy to arrange trials for the elite player that shows the potential to play at a professional level. "They have shown interest in using our group as an avenue to bring young talent to their club." Coach Rasoilo, who played in the youth ranks of S.C. Beira Mar before coming to United States, maintains a good relationship with the professional club and was happy that he was able to help Reinhold in obtaining a try-out. NJ LUSO Rangers head coach Carlos Rasoilo, a well known youth soccer coach for his many accomplishments at the youth level said, "I am extremely excited to form this partnership with U.S. PARMA. Both our organization believe in the quest to deliver quality soccer to youth. U.S. PARMA is a well established youth club with great leadership and talented staff. This partnership will be beneficial to both organizations. NJ LUSO Rangers coach goes on to say; "The merger creates a large based club that will immediately show prominence in this area. Combining our resources will allow us to deliver increased opportunities to the central/northern New Jersey region.

U.S. PARMA has had a successful history of promoting players to the D1, D2, and D3 levels of college soccer as well as the professional ranks. The club also has contacts with professional clubs in Germany as well as at Inter Milan, Atalanta, Torino and other clubs in Italy. The partnership with LUSO Soccer Academy will bring added exposure to players who dream of one day signing a professional contract. U.S. PARMA President Phillip Iuliano said, "The meetings went very well with the representatives from LUSO. Their philosophy on soccer, coincides with U.S. PARMA. Having a team represented at the USL/PDL level adds value to the development system and overall program. Both parties truly benefit. Our youth players will have opportunities and exposure to the USL/PDL level and LUSO has a direct and immediate feeder program of youth players to select from."

U.S. PARMA and LUSO Soccer Academy will immediately begin to share resources to build the PDL team's roster and to market the team. The two sides will also begin developing a plan to set up a Super Y Youth program for the summer of 2014.

AZZURRI PLAYERS COMPLETE COLLEGE CAREERS

Fran Nesi, a 6-year member of the U.S. PARMA Azzurri concluded her playing career at Hartwick College last fall. A standout player for both the Azzurri and Union Catholic High School, Fran played in all 61 games for the Hartwick Hawks, starting in 49 of them. As a defender she had one career goal, but it was a big one. It came last November with three minutes left in the ECAC Semi-Finals to tie the game 1-1. It was Hartwick's first trip to the ECAC's in 17 years, unfortunately, they went down in PK's after the scored remaining 1-1 through overtime. Their 8-8-2 record last fall marks their best record in Fran's four year career. The club looks forward to seeing Fran back in a PARMA uniform soon.

Brianna Taylor wrapped up her playing career at New Jersey City with her first selection to the NJ Athletic Conference All-Conference Team. The dean's list student started out playing D1 at St. Peter's before transferring to NJCU before her junior year. She playing in 41 games in two years at NJCU starting in 40 of them and posting 14 goals and 12 assists. Her 40 career points rank her in the top 10 in NJCU history and her 9 assists in 2011 rank 6th at NJCU for assists in a single season. Interestingly, the five players ahead of her on the single season assists record have all played or currently play for PARMA! Brianna continues to play for the Azzurri during the summer.

Ogechi Ukaegbu finished a fine career at the D1 New Jersey Institute of Technology. The senior forward from Union High School earned GWC second-team honors. Ukaegbu appeared in all 19 matches notching three goals, one assist for seven points last fall. For Gechi's career, she ranks fifth all-time and sixth in the NJIT Division 1 era with 68 career matches while ranking third all-time with 10 career goals and second in the NJIT Division I era while also ranking second in Division 1 records with 23 career points. (NJIT only recently became D1 a few years ago). She led the team in scoring in both her junior and senior seasons.

U.S. PARMA Coaches to Lead College Teams in 2012

Coach Luigi "Lou" Trentacoste will take on his first college coaching assignment when he starts preseason this August with the County College of Morris Women's Soccer Team. His career in soccer started in the professional youth system in Palermo and carried over to the USA when his family moved to Newark, New Jersey. After playing for various semi-pro teams in NY and NJ, Coach Lou founded the Newark International Team, in the L.I.A.C., where he coached Chico Borja prior to Chico going to the NY Cosmos. Coach Lou has assisted the St. Joe's High School boys' varsity team and in the Randolph Soccer Club. In 1999, he joined Phillip Iuliano and Rui Aquiles, and the trio formed the U.S. PARMA Men's Semi-Professional Team where Lou served as the Head Coach for a decade. The team won won 5 division championships in 10 years with Coach Lou being awarded Coach of the Year in 2005-06. In 2004, U.S. PARMA initiated the start up of boys and girls youth teams. Luigi was appointed as the Clubs Technical Director. In addition to his responsibilities as Technical Director, Luigi also coaches several U.S. PARMA Youth Teams in order to ensure the proper development for the young players. In 2009, his experience was vital in forming an affiliation with U.S. PARMA and and the Italian professional club, Atalanta Bergamo Calcio. In an exchange, Coaches from Atalanta BC visit every year and conduct a weeklong training program for the youth players of U.S. PARMA. Several players from the program are then selected to visit Italy for an experience both on and off the field. Coach Lou is no stranger to the female side of soccer having served as coach of the following U.S. PARMA Girls' teams: Potenza, Uniti, Dapprima, Spirito, Liberta and Vittoria. With all of his coaching experience it is hard to believe this will be his first collegiate coaching position. The County College of Morris went 8-5-1 last season and returns 11 players to it's roster.

Coach Bryan Finley, the U.S. PARMA Youth Program Director has been hired by The King's College in New York City to lead the Women's Team into their first season as a varsity team after playing club level for several years. The King's College Women's Team returns 13 players to it's roster, and Coach Bryan is currently recruiting players from TX, AZ, VA, Canada, England, and Germany in hopes of having them on the field next fall! From 2009-2011 Coach Bryan was the Assistant Coach at New Jersey City University. Prior to his arrival NJCU had not had a winning season since 1994, had not won a conference game since 1994 (going 0-105-0 from 1995-2008), had never won a championship of any kind and had never qualified for postseason playoffs. When they beat Rutgers-Newark 5-1 in the second conference game on the schedule in 2009, the story made the national news circuit! The team went on to put up an 11-15 conference record and a 41-24-1 overall record (after going 67-204-6 overall from 1994-2008) during Coach Bryan's three years at the school. They won a preseason tournament in each of the three years, qualified for the ECAC playoffs all three years, and the NJAC playoffs in 2010 and 2011 (after coming up one win short in 2009). Coach Bryan came to U.S. PARMA in 2006 when the club was fielding two boys' teams and one girls' team in the MNJYSA. He helped Coaches Phil, Lou and Rui grow the club to it's current 14 teams playing in CJYSA-MAPS, CJYSA-EDP and JAGS. He has coached the Azzurri, Spirito, Dapprima, Coraggio, Liberta and Tempesta girls' teams and the Leoni boys during this time. Additionally he has coached soccer, winter track and spring track at The Oak Knoll School in Summit since 2008.

Coach Joe Manso Elected to the NJSA Hall of Fame

Congratulations to Coach Joe Manso who coaches the U.S. PARMA U17B Ragazzi Team. Coach Joe was recently elected to the NJSA Hall of Fame for his years of service to NJ Soccer. He and Coach Lou Trentacoste (who was also elected earlier this year) will be inducted at a formal dinner on May 19. They join fellow PARMA coach Frank Maneiri, a previous inductee. Congratulations to all of them!

U.S. PARMA Women Honored on National Women in Sports Day

On Sunday January 21, 2012, Emma Culleton of the U.S. PARMA U18G Dapprima (New Providence HS) and Julia Caseres, Captain of the U23W Azzurri and Coach of the U16G Liberta (New Jersey City University) were among 200 young women from NJ high schools and colleges honored at Seton Hall University for National Women in Sports Day. This is part of a nationwide effort every year to celebrate and recognize female athletes and sports. This year marked the 40th anniversary of Title IX legislation which sought to bring equality to women's sports. Also in attendance was U.S. PARMA Program Director and Coach Bryan Finley who had been chosen by one of his soccer/track & field athletes at Oak Knoll HS, Rachael Edelson, to attend as her guest. Coach Bryan said "I was truly flattered that Rachael chose me to be a guest of her family at this event. It was a great day for everyone that attended, and I was honored to be able to share in it. I coached Emma at U14 and again now at U18, I coached Julia for two years in club and 3 years in college soccer, and she is now a coach with me with the Liberta team. I have coached Rachael for 4 years at Oak Knoll. For me to be at this event with all three young women was very special, they should all be very proud of themselves for having been chosen to represent their schools."
For more on Emma's selection, click here.

Congratulations to Coach Luigi "Lou" Trentacoste!

Coach Lou has been inducted into the NJSA NJ Soccer Hall of Fame. Coach Lou is the club's Technical Director and he currently coaches the U15B, U16B and U17B teams. He will be formally inducted in a ceremony in May. The club congratulates him and thanks him for the job he does with all of our teams.

U.S. PARMA took home 3rd place in the 2011 MAPS Academy Cup which was held in conjunction with the MAPS Central Jersey Invitational on July 9-10 at Fort Dix.

In the Academy Cup, points are awarded to the three highest placing teams from each club at the tournament. (Champions receive 10 points, Finalists get 7 points, Semi-Finalists get 5 points, etc). While many of the 23 clubs sent from 4 or 5 to as many as 12 teams, U.S. PARMA only sent the U18G Spirito, the U16G Coraggio and the U15G Liberta. The Spirito and Coraggio each earned 10 points after winning the championship of their bracket, while the Liberta, who lost in the finals in a PK shootout, earned 7 points. The 27 total points by the three teams was good for a Third Place finish amongst the 22 other clubs represented. Congratulations to all three teams on a successful weekend!

U.S. PARMA and Atalanta B.C. Alliance Continues to Strengthen

U.S. PARMA and Atalanta B.C. continued to strengthen their alliance by having several U.S. PARMA Boys (U16 and U14) embark on a 10-day soccer experience in Italy.

The boys were treated to morning/early afternoon sightseeing visits to Florence, Pisa, and several towns in the Tuscany region. Visits to the "Azzurri" National Team Center, Soccer Museum, and the Atalanta BC Headquarters/Training Center in Bergamo were also on the itinerary.

In the late afternoon of each day, the boys had training sessions scheduled which included practices with the U19 National Player Pool from Empoli FC at the Empoli Training Center, U16B Forcoli Squad, and the U16B Atalanta Valdera Calcio Team.

The boys were exposed to Professional Coaches as well as players of these Clubs and obtained a rewarding experience to the philosophy and training curriculum utilized on a day to day basis.

In June, the coaching staff of Atalanta BC will once again visit NJ, for the 4th consecutive year, and conduct a week-long summer camp exclusively for U.S. PARMA Players.

The U.S. PARMA Soccer Club, Officers and Staff, is very pleased in providing these tremendous opportunities and unique experiences for it's youth players.

La Valdera Calcio disembarks in the USA

L'Atalanta will be the bridge between the Association from Pisa & the US Parma- VSA Academy.

After a successful experience during the summer of 2008, during which select staff members of Valdera organized and directed a camp for youth teams of US Parma (Springfield, New Jersey), this year as well the soccer association president Vito Consoloni confirms and reinforces the three-way collaborative agreement among Valdera Calcio, Atalanta B.C. and the American Association US Parma-VSA Academy.

Consolidated the official affiliation between Atalanta and Valdera, the latest is proposed in the panorama of American youth soccer as an instrument of professional and technical growth with a program that this year will involve not only the young soccer players, but also the coaches of the VSA Academy with a staging of formations.

The merits of what is presenting itself as a true cultural and sport exchange, are to be found in the extreme professionalism and obstinacy of Phillip Iuliano, the brains and soul of the US Parma-VSA Academy, an important reality in the New Jersey soccer panorama. Alongside President Iuliano works the Technical Director Luigi Trentacoste, heir to a family from Palermo which in the 50's and 60's ran the "Red & Black" Association. Strengthened by this tradition and by his personal soccer experiences in Italy and in the United States Coach Trentacoste is the perfect right-hand man for President Iuliano, capable of combining the strong growth spurt of the stars and stripes soccer with the great structural potential that the United States panorama can offer.

In February the two leaders Phillip Iuliano and Luigi Trentacoste came to Italy for an in-person inspection and observed the actual value of the "Black & Blue" soccer school, the programs that the Association from Pisa brings forth and the high level line-up of Valdera instructors, confirming and solidifying this latest agreement.

The Valdera staff reconfirms as head of this new project the technical director Professor Roberto Niccolai, by his side the goalie coach Roberto Marconcini (former professional soccer player) and Professor Luigi Del Sordo from Margina Coperta (sports partner of Valdera).

The long view of the technical director Robert Niccolai has created the presumption that this strongly desired agreement not be seen as an impromptu experience but as a long-lasting technical relationship.

The coaches will leave Italy at the end of June and will initially be working with a camp for children ages 7- 10, following which there will be a technical refresher course for the coaches.

Following will start the camp aimed exclusively to US Parma with the support of Atalanta and in closing their stay the US Parma- VSA Academy will celebrate with a big feast their 10th anniversary, at which the Italian staff will attend with great pleasure and extreme honor.

The return to Italy is expected on July 20th, but surely it will not end here...

Congratulations to Ann Mularz of our Women's Premier Team

Ann has been awarded 2008 ESPN Magazine Women's Soccer Academic All-American and Landmark Conference Defender of the Year. Ann joins Katie Feehan as our second ESPN Academic All-American on the Women's Team. The club is proud of you both!

U.S. PARMA Soccer Visits Italy

U.S. PARMA Soccer Club President Phillip Iuliano and the Club's Technical Director Luigi Trentacoste visited Italy for 10 days this past February 2009. They were hosted by the staff of the Serie A Professional Club, Atalanta BC during which time they visited the training facilities and observed professional level and youth level training sessions.

The trip also included a visit to the Italian Soccer Federation (F.I.G.C.), tour of the National Team "Azzurri" Training Facility, and a stop at the Museo Del Calcio (Museum of Soccer). They were also guests at a Serie A match (Fiorentina Vs. Lazio), a Serie B match (Livorno Vs. Piacenza), as well as a mid-week match (Empoli Vs Forcoli). Additionally, the pair attended a few Viareggio Tournament matches (U19 Boys Tournament) that U.S. PARMA Men's Semi-Professional Team Goalkeeper, Matt Glackin, was participating in.

The trip concluded with a meeting and press conference with Atalanta BC officials on how each side can continue to benefit from the relationship in the future which could lead to training trips to Italy, player and coach exchanges, and clinics in NJ with U.S. PARMA players and staff. Below is the article from the press conference and the English translation.

Important Agreement with Margine and the Victory Soccer Academy

The stars and stripes of soccer have landed at Brizzi with a visit to the facilities by Phil Iuliano, President and Luigi Trentacoste, Technical Director of the Victory Soccer Academy, an important soccer school in New Jersey.

It involves a collaboration, born last year, between the American Club and Atalanta BC, represented by the sporting association closely tied to the Orobica Society like Margine Coperta and Valdera, with the goal of expanding a trend that in the USA boasts impressionable numbers, being that soccer is the number one female and male sport practiced in colleges. In July, Luigi Del Sordo, Head Technical Director of the soccer league of Margine, went to New Jersey to visit an exemplary methods camp, and now the American counter parts have exchanged the visit in order to see first hand the vanguard methodology used. "For us" explains President Phil Iuliano, "The objective of taking children off the streets is combined with that of creating a soccer club of quality that at the end guarantees a benefit to society". At the moment there are 12 teams, 5 male and 7 female, with the first team as a Semi Professional but pointing to a future in the Major League.

The trainer of the keepers is Roberto Marconcini, the unforgettable extreme defender/keeper of Pisa. "I think that we are creating something important" adds Luigi Del Sordo "It's an ambitious and gratifying project because American kids are willing to learn and are fully dedicated".

In the meantime, in regard to the results of the young nerazzure, it has been the umpteenth week of triumph with the regional "Giovanissimi" of Marco Nerozzi (2-0 al Camaiore) by now only steps away from qualifying at the Tuscan finals. The regional students of Chiti, disemebark the terraine of Fortis Lucchese (4-2) while the provincial field of the "Giovanissimi B" reach 20 consecutive victories, with 129 goals and always zero in the negative. Also to be commended are the "Allievi B" of Bacci and the "Giovannissimi" of Bellandi.
