Through this Etymology Word Web activity students will learn to spell words, containing the same base word, by understanding that the word is spelt according to the original meaning of that base or root word. Students will be required to use a dictionary to search for words with a common base or root word and then record these, along with their definition, on the task sheet. Engaging students in etymology and with how words and letter combinations are derived from other languages, can help to grow their knowledge of words, spelling and word recognition. This, in turn, is supporting them to make great spelling choices in their writing. This task is a great way to start conversation amongst the class about the links between spelling and the meaning of words, and can be used as an individual task or as part of literacy rotations.
The inclusion of a blank template so students can research their own choices is a great idea.
I going to find this really useful. What was most impressive is that I requested an editable version of the web and received it in less than 24 hours! Thank you Twinkl

This is a great activity for your child to complete at home, either independently or with family support, to help them strengthen their spelling and word knowledge. Using a dictionary to complete and fill out these teacher made templates, will help to reinforce their growing spelling proficiency and set them up for success in writing tasks.
Etymology is the study of word origins and their meanings. It looks at they way in which words and word meanings have changed and altered throughout history as well as the link between words through meaning and spelling. For example, “tele” the Greek root word meaning far, is used in words such as television, telephone, telegraph and teleport.
