The number of outages has surged in recent hours, per DownDetector.

More than 73,000 reports had been submitted by 8am EST.

Outage reports started to appear in the early hours of Thursday morning and briefly dropped at around 5am.

Reports have started to decline, per DownDetector.

AT&T customers said their cell phones are stuck in SOS mode.

It was not immediately clear what caused the widespread outage.

“Some of our customers are experiencing wireless service interruptions this morning," an AT&T spokesperson told The U.S. Sun.

"Our network teams took immediate action and so far three-quarters of our network has been restored.

"We are working as quickly as possible to restore service to remaining customers.”

In San Francisco, some AT&T customers have struggled to reach 911 services, per the city's Fire Department.

Those who cannot get through to emergency services via cell phone have been urged to use a landline.

Americans have been urged not to call 911 solely to test their cell phone service.

"We are actively engaged and monitoring this," The San Francisco Fire Department said.

First responders in Upper Arlington, Ohio have also said the AT&T outage has affected the Fire Department's fire alarms, according to CNN.

Meanwhile, officials in St. Joseph County, Michigan have reportedly urged residents to place 911 calls via a Wi-Fi network if they are unable to through their phone service.

Cell phone users in Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Miami have also reported outages.

Outages have been reported in Houston, Dallas, and Tampa.

Police in Fort Worth, Texas, have confirmed the 911 call center has not been impacted by the outage.

Flagler County cops in Florida said AT&T customers who cannot call 911 should send a text message.

"Texts to 911 from AT&T users experiencing this outage are now being received," sheriffs said.

T-Mobile and Verizon users have also been impacted by outages, per CNN.

More than 2,000 reports have been lodged, according to Downdetector.

Users have complained about having no phone signal and difficulty accessing 5G internet.

A Verizon spokesperson told The U.S. Sun that the outages were supposedly not impacting the company's network, but instead affecting customers that are attempting to reach another wireless carrier experiencing outages.

"We are continuing to monitor the situation," the spokesperson said.

Verizon outages have also increased in recent hours, with more than 4,300 reports submitted at its peak.

The most prominent locations include Brooklyn, Chicago, and New York City.
