Description

Get your students engaged and analyzing the classification of real numbers in the real number system with this Two Truths and a Lie fun 8th grade math activity! Students are given 9 problems that each have three statements. They identify which two statements are true, which statement is the lie, and explain why. There are three different versions of this activity to best fit your students needs!

The problems in this activity go over natural numbers, whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, and irrational numbers as a part of the real number system. See the last thumbnail in the preview for example problems!

DIGITAL + PRINTABLE VERSIONS

There is a google sheets version, a worksheet version, and a task cards version with the same questions included. You can give all of your students the same version, give them a choice, or have them show their work for the digital activity on the printable worksheet! The task cards version is great for facilitating discussion as these two truths and a lie activities naturally open up great conversation!

This product includes

     ● Google Sheets Version - Self-Checking

     ● Google Sheets Answer Key

     ● Printable Worksheet Version

     ● Printable Task Cards Version

* The worksheet version & task cards version are included in the PDF

On the google sheets version, students go through each statement and identify it as a TRUTH or a LIE and explain their answer in the explanation box. Once they get all three questions correct, the answer boxes turn green and students are told "Nice job! You did it!". If students do not get all of the statements correct, they are told "keep trying" and the answer boxes remain blue so they can try and figure out their mistake on their own.

Students can check the "show me my feedback" check box if they would like to see the answer boxes turn red/green. The red/green feature is not automatic to keep students from guessing. This check box feature can even be deleted if your students are abusing it for guessing. See the preview for a short video of how the google sheets version works!

On the worksheet version, students circle the statement that is a lie, and explain why.

On the task cards version, the problems are each half a page. These are easy to print out to use for small groups, a group activity, or can be posted around the room. Students can record their answers on another sheet of paper or on the worksheet version.

I hope that by providing multiple options, you are able to best fit the needs of your students!

This activity aligns well with TEKS 8.2A.

Know that numbers that are not rational are called irrational. Understand informally that every number has a decimal expansion; for rational numbers show that the decimal expansion repeats eventually, and convert a decimal expansion which repeats eventually into a rational number.
