Afternoon Routine - After School Visual Directions for Executive Functioning
- PDF
Description
Companion resource to the Before School Routine Visual Directions Cards comes the After School Visual Directions Cards! ✨
To prevent my students from struggling with executive functioning and independent organizational skills, I always established very clear, simple morning routine steps and included LOTS of visual directions supports.
Strong routines provide structure, predictability, and the foundations for a successful day of learning! ✨
But this doesn't just have to start when kids walk into a classroom!
It can happen before school, too!
Now to the details... (or lack thereof)
Why did I decide NOT to include too many details for each step of my students' routines when I taught? Why did I make the same choice when creating this resource?
... because people don’t remember things that way.
Simple visual directions and simple language help learners remember the steps of a routine faster ⏰ and better, thus building their executive functioning muscles. I learned this in a professional development session once!
This resource is designed with those principles of simplicity in mind.

Ideas for Use
This resource can be used in many ways!
Here are a few ideas:
- Create a laminated check-off visual chart
- Create a reusable chart for kids to visually communicate which steps they have accomplished (see product preview for example)
- Number the steps
- Visual Routine practice
- Read a morning routine social story and have your child identify the various routine steps in the story using the picture cards
You know how the saying goes...
"Go slow to go fast."
Once the individualized after school routine is introduced and rehearsed, your student or child will grow to become an independent routine follower themselves, saving you both time ⏰ and creating a positive end ✨ to each day!
