Joshua 11:23 So Joshua
took the whole land,
according to all that the
LORD had said to Moses;
First usage of the word
“inheritance” in the Bible.

Joshua gave it as an
inheritance to Israel
according to their divisions
by their tribes. Then the
land rested from war.

Inheritance

= property or land given at
birth (i.e., birthright) by one
person to a successive
generation

Typically an inheritance is thought of as bequeathed after death. For the
Jewish people and the Christian inheritance is a possession established
and given at birth or rebirth.

1 Peter 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father
of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to
His abundant mercy has begotten us again
to a living hope through the resurrection of
Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an
inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and
that does not fade away, reserved in heaven
for you,

Ephesians 1:11-14 In Him also we have
obtained an inheritance, being predestined
according to the purpose of Him who works all
things according to the counsel of His will, 12
that we who first trusted in Christ should be to
the praise of His glory. 13 In Him you also
trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the
gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having
believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit
of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our
inheritance until the redemption of the
purchased possession, to the praise of His
glory.

years. And the LORD said to him: “You
are old, advanced in years, and there
remains very much land yet to be
possessed.

Unstable as water, you shall
not excel, because you went
up to your father’s bed; then
you defiled it— he went up
to my couch.”
‫פּ‬ַ‫ח‬ַ‫ז‬ (pǎ·ḥǎz) = frothy, foamy, formally,
reckless or overflowing

5 “Simeon and Levi are brothers; instruments of cruelty
are in their dwelling place. 6 Let not my soul enter their
council; let not my honor be united to their assembly;
for in their anger they slew a man, and in their self-will
they hamstrung an ox. 7 Cursed be their anger, for it is
fierce; and their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them
in Jacob and scatter them in Israel.
‫ח‬ָ‫מ‬ָ‫ס‬ (ḥā·mās) = violence, i.e., a strong, fierce,
destructive force resulting in acts that
maim, destroy, kill, often implying a
lawlessness, terror, and lack of moral
restraint

set up for themselves Micah’s carved image which he
made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.
