I tend to get those weird hormonal zits on my chin and the occasional blackhead around my nose. So when my friend asked me why -- oh why -- she was getting major acne out of the blue on your forehead, I did a little research.

It turns out, there are a few reasons you could be breaking out above the brow, and it's not just "Oh, I need to wash my face more!"

First, try treating your acne with a clarifying cleanser (Clinique Acne Solutions Cleansing Foam is great) and then use spot treatment like Murad Acne Complex Acne Spot Treatment for your AM routine. Then at night, use a chemical exfoliant after cleansing (I heart Philosophy Clear Days Ahead Overnight Repair Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment Pads).

Now, take a look at these possible causes and see if they help you clear up quicker.

  • Your styling products. This is a total bummer, but if you've got bangs or use a lot of styling product, the dirt, oil and other stuff setting up shop on your forehead can be a total picnic for acne bacteria. Lay off the stylers and clip your bangs off your face until you're in the clear.
  • Too many nights out. According to the ancient science of Chinese Facial Mapping, breakouts between your brows can be a sign of an unhappy liver; and zits along your forehead can be a sign of a crappy diet. So skip the booze for a bit and eat fresh, unprocessed foods for a week. Even if it doesn't clear up your breakouts, you'll feel totally awesome. Promise.
  • Stress. Breakouts along your head can be a major sign of stress. If you've been a total head case, get your cortisol levels under control (workouts, meditation, saying NO to extra work) -- your skin should follow suite.
  • Your hat. Yep, that fedora or floppy hat you've been rocking all summer could be gnarlier than you think. But, if you're sure it's clean, your zitfest could be caused by irritation of that hat rubbing against your head. Skip it for a few days and see if things clear up.
