CONVERSE,
INVERSE, AND
CONTRAPOSITIVE
Converse a conditional proposition is formed
by interchanging the position of its antecedent
and consequent.
Inverse a conditional proposition is formed by
negating the antecedent and consequent.
Contrapositive a conditional proposition is
formed by getting the inverse of the converse.
Converse, Inverse and Contrapositive
Conditional If p, then q
Statement
Converse If q, then p

Inverse If not p, then not q

Contrapositive If not q, then not p


Examples

 If you eat a pint of ice cream, then you will get an upset
stomach
Converse: If you get an upset stomach, then you have
been eaten a pint of ice cream.
Inverse: If you have not eaten a pint of ice cream, then
you will not get an upset stomach.
Contrapositive: If you do not have an upset stomach, then
you have not eaten a pint of ice cream.
 Dark chocolate contains 70-85% cocoa.
Converse: If the chocolate contains 70-85% cocoa, then it
is dark.
Inverse: If the chocolate is not dark, then it does not
contain 70-85% cocoa.
Contrapositive: If the chocolate does not contain 70-85%
cocoa, then it is not dark.
Try to answer the following for better

If a figure is a square, then it is a quadrilateral.
If three points lie on a line, then the three points are
collinear.
If the cloud is dark, then it will rain.
If two angles are congruent, then they have the
same measure.
If I am sleeping, then I am breathing.
If you have a coupon, then you will receive a free
drink with your pizza.
