All occupants should study carefully the information given in this manual.
Before starting the engine read the instruction manual of the engine and the
plastic foils fastened inside of the helmsman dome.
Hull and canopy are bolted with stainless steel bolts and fastening is made
watertight by means of marine sealant. The roof of the canopy is especially
formed for collecting of rainwater.
The buoyancy tanks are filled with polyurethane foam and have enough
capacity to float the boat in damaged conditions. The buoyancy tanks which
are under the roof of the canopy makes the boat self-righting even when
partially flooded. All controls are effected by the helmsman dome which has
an excellent all-around visibility.
The lifeboat is designed for max. 20 persons on board.
Fire Protected Lifeboat is designed for max. 19 persons on board.
Designed hight of launching is 14.00 meters.
Designed angle of launching ramp is 35° degrees.
The engine is a water cooled “keel cooling” diesel engine, gives 6 knot
speed to the Lifeboat. The external hull and the canopy are orange and the
internal surface is light green colored.
A- Launching:
a) In case of alarm, all personal should proceed the boat station. Life
jackets must be carried with, but not put on. (Fig.2)
b) If the battery charger is connected to the ship’s network, disconnect
the battery charger.(Fig.2)
c) Disengage the boat’s lashings.(Fig.2, Fig.9)
If you want to enter the boat only for maintenance, not for launching,
do not disengage the lashings. Especially in bad weather conditions
to keep the lashings engaged is very important.
d) Open the embarkation door. Opening the door or closing it can be
done from inside or outside of the boat.
e) Board the lifeboat.
f) It is preferable if all the occupant always uses the same seats.
g) Fasten the seatbelts as soon as seated. All items must be followed
while securing the seat belts. Adjust the belt to your size.(Fig.3a)
h) It is very important for the occupants to keep their heads remain
close to the headrests of the seats(Fig.3b). Before beginning to the
launching operation, be sure that all the occupants are properly
seated and safety belts are fastened.
i) Before launching be sure that the launching area of the sea is free
from different floating objects.
j) Before launching close the embarkation door and the hatch on the
canopy’s roof. Close the natural ventilation fittings.
k) During launching the nozzle rudder must be in zero degree “O°”
position.
WARNING
a) Before starting the engine read the instruction manual of the engine.
Follow all the items written on the plastic foil fastened near the
helmsman seat. (Fig.6)
b) Switch on main switch
c) Put the speed-gear lever into neutral position
d) Switch on ignition (Run).
e) Push on the engine start button until the engine starts.
f) After the engine starts, by moving the speed-gear lever ahead or
astern, gear box and speed is controlled. (Fig.6)
g) If you want to control RPM of the engine without operating the gear,
press the button “A” on the speed-gear control lever. When the lever
comes to neutral position button “A” springs back automatically.
h) For stopping the engine bring the speed-gear control lever to neutral
position and press the stop button on control table.
i) Controls from the helmsman position is shown in Fig.6.
j) When there is hot water in cooler system, never open the engine’s
cooling water filler cap.
5. Electric System
6. Steering System
a) The stainless steel nozzle rudder is controlled via a cable from
helmsman position. (Fig.6)
b) In case of a failure on the cable system, disconnect the cable from
rudder shaft and connect the emergency tiller to the shaft. The
emergency tiller is located inside of the canopy, near the upper aft
seat, at port side of the lifeboat. (Fig.10)
c) Open the cover which is the floor of the first step just after entrance
and fit the emergency tiller to the rudder shaft. (Fig.10 and 13)
d) For connecting the emergency tiller to the rudder shaft there is no
need of using different tools.
a) To use the fore bollard, open the round hatch which is at the roof of
the canopy. (Fig.1)
b) There is a natural ventilation valve mounted on the hatch cover
(manually operation). Do not forget to close the fitting during
launching and capsizing.
c) Buoyant life lines which are becketed around both sides of the
canopy, must be tightened during launching and when not in use.

d) Hand rails on the canopy provides safety while walking on gunwale
and attaching lifting slings to the lifting eyes on the canopy. (Fig.11)
e) There are two drills (St B & Port) on the canopy’s roof for collecting
the rain water. The valves which are inside of the canopy’s roof
should be always kept closed unless, collecting operation of rain
water. (Fig.11)
f) Acryl windows are mounted on the helmsman dome with stainless
steel bolts and GRP frames using marine sealant. It is possible to
change them when they are damaged. Never use any solvent for
cleaning them. Try to clean them with fresh water.
g) Retro Reflective tapes are provided on the canopy. Change them if
they are damaged. (Fig.11)
h) Navigation light (top light) over the roof of the helmsman dome is
controlled by helmsman position. (Fig.1 and Fig.11)
i) Fig.9 shows the outlets of different pipes on the transom. Engines
exhaust pipe outlet, electric bilge pump outlet and manual bilge
pump outlet are on the transom. Electric bilge pump is controlled
from helmsman position. According to its’ position, on the board of
the lifeboat, it is useless to use the electric bilge pump when the boat
is stable on the ship’s ramp. Use this pump only when the lifeboat is
afloat. At fire Protected Lifeboats, there is a discharge outlet in the
water spray system which will be shown later in this manual. This
outlet is also on the transom.
j) On the aft bulkhead of the canopy, the outlets of different natural
ventilation systems are mounted. Before launching and in case of
capsizing and especially in fire conditions close the valves, (the
valves which are inside of the cabin and on the aft bulkhead). After
the boat is properly afloat open all the ventilation valves. (Fig.8)
k) The radar reflector is stored in the equipment locker. After
assembling the reflector, mount it in the socket which is on the aft
bulkhead. (Fig.9)
l) There is a natural ventilation system mounted on the entrance door.

m) Under the center aisle floor, engine and propulsion system, batteries
box, fuel tank and fresh water containers locker is mounted. For
controlling these units open the covers which are on the floor. Non-
skid surface is fastened on the floor. The humps on the floor provide
safer walking conditions during the embarkation when the boat is on
the ramp. (Fig.13)
n) In case of a big repair on the engine, instead of opening the engine
cover, it is possible to remove a larger part of the floor, where the
covers move together with the frame. First open the cover which is
over the Fuel Tank and then disengage the four seats shown in
Fig.13 and disengage the other bolts and take off the floor frame.
o) The stainless steel fuel tank has enough capacity to sail more than
24 hours with a 6 knots speed (about~140 lt.). To fill the tank, just
open the cover which is mounted over the tank. (Fig.13)
p) On the center aisle floor just after the entrance door, there is a step
cover which is possible to open. In case of a need for repair,
disengage the bolt and open the cover for repairing the rudder
system or hydraulic release jack. Fit the emergency tiller to the
rudder shaft, in case of bad functioning of the steering cable system.
(Fig.10 and 13)
q) GRP, fresh water containers locker, which is isolated with
polyurethane foam, is under the floor of the center aisle. The
capacity is 12x5 lt (total 60 lt.) In case of usage of drink water, open
the cover of the locker. (Fig.13)
r) 4 lashing points of the stretcher (Fig.13) for survivors, are on the
floor of the center aisle.
s) The inventory locker is on starboard side of the fore part of the cabin.
Some SOLAS inventories are in the locker. (Fig.14)
t) Girders, radar reflector leg and etc. are in suitable places inside of
the cabin.
u) Handrails inside of the cabin, provide easier embarkation and easier
moving for taking seats. Do not pull or push the steering wheel
during embarkation or taking seats.
v) 6 kg. Capacity, portable Fire Extinguisher is located inside of the
cabin on the front of the port side seat at the helmsman dome.

w) Compass is controlled from helmsman position. (Fig.6)
x) Plastic foils are fastened inside of the cabin and shows instructions
for different operations.
8. Training
WARNING
IMPORTANT CAUTION
The Freefall Lifeboat is constructed and equipped in accordance with
SOLAS rules and regulations for the safety of the ship’s personal. It is very
important for the personal to be familiar with using the lifeboat. Before
beginning to use the boat, the personal should study carefully the Operation
Manual of the Lifeboat and the operating instruction of the engine of the
lifeboat to be thoroughly conversant with the system. While using the
lifeboat, the personal should follow carefully the instruction written on the
plastic foils and fastened on different parts of the cabin. During the
embarkation, launching, operating at sea, recovering and engaging the
lashing system, a failure to observe the procedure may lead to serious
injury. Even some operations which do not show too much importance,
must be done according to the instructions and with care.
WARNING
Study carefully the Operation Manual of the Lifeboat and the instruction
book of the Engine, before any operation.
Follow all the instructions written on the plastic foils and fastened on
different parts of the lifeboat.
Failure to observe the instructions, serious injury might occur especially
during the launching.
All occupants must be familiar with the system.
Smoking is strictly forbidden at inside of the cabin of the lifeboat.
Disengage the lashing system and batteries charging cable if connected
to the ship, before launching.
Do not disengage the lashing system especially in bad weather
conditions, when you enter to the boat only for maintenance.
Before launching be sure that the impact area of the sea is free from
different floating objects.
All personal should seat properly, fastened seat belts and keep their
heads remain close to the headrests of the seats during launching.
During launching the nozzle rudder must be in zero degree “0” position.
During launching, close all the hatches and the ventilation valves.
Carry the life jackets with you, but do not put on during launching.
Close the valve screw (screw “A” Fig.4) of the hydraulic pump, before
beginning to operate the pump. (Valve screw “C” Fig.4 for the
emergency hydraulic pump)
After the boat is afloat, open the valve screw of the hydraulic pump.
After the boat is afloat, open the ventilation valves.
Follow the instruction manual of the engine for starting.
Before recovery of the boat, lifting slings must be attached
safely to the lifting eyes on the canopy.
After recovery, be sure that the boat sits on the launching ramp
in housed position and then engage the lashing system.
Engage the batteries charging cable to the ship.
For charging the batteries from ship’s network main switch and all the
other electric consumers must be switched off.
When there is hot water in cooler system of the Engine, never open the
Engine’s cooling water filler cap.
When the boat is in housed position, close the hatch and the entrance
door. Close also the natural ventilation fitting which is on the hatch.
Leave the seat belts properly before leaving the boat.
9. Water Spray and Air Support Systems for
Fire Protected Lifeboat
a) Only for Fire Protected Lifeboats, water spray and air support
system are provided to be used in case of fire. Fig.16 shows the
perspective drawing of the water spray system.Fig.17 shows the
operation diagram of the water spray system.Fig.18 shows the air
support system.
b) In case of fire, both systems, water spray and air support must be
used together to achieve positive results.
c) Before launching in case of fire:
1- Close all the natural ventilation valves.
2- Be sure that the air bottle valves are open. (Fig.18 “AA”)
d) Just after launching:
1- Open the main valve of the water spray pump. (Fig. 16 and 17
“WA”) During this operation, fresh water connection valve “WC”
must be kept close.
2- After the boat is afloat the water spray pump begins to operate
with the start of the engine.
3- Be sure that fresh water connection valve and sea discharge
valve of the system are closed.(Fig.16 and 17 “WC” and “WE”)
4- Open the main valve of the air support system. (Fig.18 “AE”)
e) During sailing through the fire, the water spray system cools whole
outer surface of the canopy, (Fig.16). Keep the valve of the water
spray pipes always in open position, (Fig.16 and 17 “WF”).
f) The main sea valve of the water spray pump must be always kept
close during the normal conditions. (Fig.16 and 17 “WA”) During
normal conditions (not in fire) keep open the sea discharge valve
“WE” and cooling water valve “WB”, for circulating of cooling water of
the pump.
g) To control the water spray pump in normal floating conditions, close
the valves of water spray pipes “WF”, open the sea discharge valve
“WE”, open the main sea valve “WA” of the Water Spray System, run
the pump, control the water running out of the sea discharge on the
transom, (Fig.16 and 17). During this operation fresh water
connection valve “WC” must be kept close.
h) Do not leave the system with salty water in. After testing the system
with sea water, the system should be flushed with fresh water. Close
the main valve of the pump “WA”. Close the sea discharge valve
“WE”. Close the cooling water valve “WB”, open the fresh water
connection valve “WC” and pump the fresh water into the water
spray system. Be sure that the system is flushed with fresh water,
close the valve of the fresh water and disengage the connection.

i) In case of fire after opening the main valve ”AE” of the air support
system, the compressed air passes into the pressure reducer,
(Fig.18 “AF”). Control the pressure gauges Fig.18 “AG” and “AH”.
Normally, the system will begin to supply air from air outlets Fig.18
“AN”. The pressure reducer is adjusted. So that they will spend the
fresh air of the compressed air bottles in 10 minutes, supplying air
into the cabin of the lifeboat while the engine runs at 3000 RPM and
boat is full with max. personal.
j) It is possible to refill the air bottles, when they are empty, without
taking them out of their places.
Be sure the air bottle valves are open. Fig.18 “AA”
Close the main air support valve. Fig.18 “AE”
Connect the high pressure refilling hose of the ship’s compressor. Be
sure that the working pressure of this refilling hose is over 200 Bars.
Open the refilling valve F.18 “AM”
Charge the bottles Fig.18 “AA” until the pressure gauge Fig.18 “AD”
shows a pressure of 200 Bar.
Close refilling valve “AM”.
Disconnect the high pressure refilling hose from the system.
The air support system is ready to use.

GEPA has manufactured a new Freefall Launching System to operate
freefall launching without the operating crew on-board. This system was
designed in order to meet the requirements of the new IMO Regulations
concerning 5 yearly service of Freefall Lifeboats. This system is to be used
only for launching without the operating crew on-board.
In order to adapt this system to our Freefall Lifeboats, a 50 mm hole is
drilled to the canopies aft bulkhead. A stainless steel plug is mounted to this
hole and this plug must be opened only during launching tests without the
crew on-board. This plug will be used to get through the hydraulic hose that
will connect the new system with the lifeboats hydraulic launching pump.
The operation of the new system is described in detail in the operation
manuals that are provided to the service engineers. It is very important that
this stainless steel water tight plug must stay closed all the time.
All Freefall lifeboats delivered after April 2009 will be fitted with this plug.
