      Season 1 – The Deuce

      2017 Drama List
93% 202 Reviews Tomatometer 86% 500+ Ratings Audience Score Created by George Pelecanos and David Simon, who also collaborated on HBO's "The Wire" and "Treme," the semifictional drama series "The Deuce" tells of the germination of the sex-trade industry in the heart of New York's Times Square. It's the early 1970s, and the porn business begins a shift from organized crime-backed parlors to a legitimate, culturally accepted enterprise. A cast of barkeeps, prostitutes, pimps, police and nightlife seekers centers around twins Vincent and Frankie Martino (James Franco, in a dual role), who navigate the sex business after meeting well-connected mobster Rudy Pipilo. Their storyline, among others, merges with that of prostitute Candy, whose ambition and intelligence lead her to a more prominent role in the industry. Mar 30, 2018 Full Review Sarah Hughes Guardian This generosity of spirit is the show's greatest gift. Where other series use sex as titillation, The Deuce prefers to examine the nature of desire, both fantasy and reality. Dec 29, 2017 Full Review Hugo Rifkind Times (UK) The Deuce is violent and sexy, but also carries just enough social commentary to let you tell yourself you're watching the violence and sex for utterly worthy purposes. Gareth v A gritty and at times brutal telling of Times Square, New York in the 1970's and the rise of porn industry. Tightly written, and led by some standout performances. One of 2017's best shows. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/28/23 Full Review Doug B Rewatched after catching up with S2 and S3, there is a lot of fun and joy in this season, despite how deep and dark the subject matter. Even though I don't love the following seasons as much, may be in top 10 shows of all time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Sanjay N Really great series...the way you connect with the characters see how the evolve and at the same time witness the history of New York..... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/25/22 Full Review Audience Member I knew about the Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling before and was a fan of Marc Marion's anyway. That being said, this is more entertaining than one might expect. One need not be a fan of any kind of wrestling but it helps. Flawed characters but you will root for them one minute and throw your hands up others. If you don't want to see strong, flawed women, don't bother. Otherwise, tag in and watch it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member F@cking D.S. knows how to tell a story and expose the truth. Glad i m around to see his work Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review jack z The Deuce is dense and almost mythically fascinating; in other words, it's a perfect -- albeit bleak -- representation of 1970s New York City.
