The 2009 animated film “UP” made by Pixar, is a timeless childhood classic. I remember when I first heard about this movie when it was in theaters, I would have been 7 at the time out. I wanted to go see it, but I had to wait until it came out on DVD (Shoutout to the early 2000s). When I finally watched “UP” it immediately became my favorite animated film. And it remains that to this day, but not simply for the fact that it is a great children’s’ film, but because of the deep messaging and storytelling that the movie tells. “UP” follows Carl Fredrickson, a 78-year-old retired balloon salesman, on his quest to move his home to the waterfall in South America that he and his late wife had always dreamed of retiring at. Carl, embittered from his wife’s passing and never getting to fulfill his dream of moving to “Paradise Falls”, decides to attach all of his balloons to his house and float away to “Paradise Falls”. When he does this, he discovers that a young boy named Russell has stowed away on his house. The film follows the two as they adventure to South America, evade capture from the evil Charles Muntz, befriend a bird named Kevin, and teach Carl the lesson that maybe his life isn’t so bad after all. While the main character of this film is Carl Fredrickson, it is really the supporting cast in my opinion that do the heavy lifting of making his character relatable. His wife Ellie, who passes away, does so much to drive the story. She helps Carl grow his want for adventure, helps set the stage for the eventual trip to South America, and ultimately her passing is what drives Carl into such bitterness and emptiness. And then there is Russell. Carl does not like Russell. But, he is forced to work with Russell, and through that, in a way, he gets the one thing that he never had, a child. The budding relationship we see throughout the film is really moving, and the significance can go by unnoticed if you do not pay attention. Lastly, Charles Muntz’s character is significant, because in a way, he represents a much more evil version of Carl, of what Carl could become. He too, had a dream, that was taken away, and moved to Paradise falls to try to fulfill that dream. But he let that bitterness consume him, to the point that he becomes a villain. He forces Carl to make a decision on who he wants to be, because in a way, he is Carl. I think this movie is so great to watch as an adult. There is so much more messaging in the film that can go unnoticed to a child. That is what makes it a great film for people of all ages, and for families to watch together. “UP” takes a simple, rather humorous thing like a house floating on balloons and turns it into a thought-provoking medium. The animation is very good and helps tell the story in an interesting way. Story wise, I think it is great, because, as mentioned above, it provides something for people of all ages, and keeps them entertained. And 15 years after its release, it is still keeping us entertained, and dreaming of a house by the beautiful waterfall of “Paradise Falls”.

Yes, the first 10 minutes are the peak of the film. Yes, the movie never reaches those heights again. But that doesn't mean the rest of the movie isn't massively charming, funny, and emotional.
