Too young for a jag?
Discussion
I'm 40. I've had 5 Jaguars. I tend to keep cars a long time; these weren't flirtations owned for weeks.
No picture of my first X-Type.
I had this S-Type for years. Only a 3.0 V6 but it was a brilliant car and I still miss it.
I've had this one for over 10 years - with a second set of small wheels and proper winter tyres it is absolutely superb in snow and ice here in Scotland.
This was not approved of by old men.
Now I have my first V12. Maybe I'm getting old now, but I really, really like it.
Life is too short to spend YOUR money to end up spending YOUR time sat in a car that someone else told you was suitable. Maria Condo those people - they are not good friends.
I have had all the same previously though from various idiots thinking I should buy an Audi S3 instead or whatever. I have absolutely no interest whatsoever owning stuff like that.
Let some unimaginative sheep tell you these are old mens' cars if you want.
You'll enjoy looking back at your car when you park it. They'll have a generic German hatchback they could find 20 ones identical to within a 5 mile radius on Autotrader.

I'm not blessed with youth in the same way you are (i'm in my forties), but this is my current XJ steer.
You're neighbours will regard you as a Cad as explained by Jeremy Clarkson here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eWIrBOc3zE
As others have rightly said, just do it

Apologies for posting a link to a Newspaper Article but I thought it may help inspire the OP to purchase a Jaguar . I have looked at the accompanying Pictures and cant find anyone present at this JLR Christmas Party over 45 ??? I am wondering if JLR have done this on purpose , I was expecting Brian Blessed

Like most things with cars, if you think you will turn back and look at it when you unlock the front door of the house, then go for it.
Drive what makes you happy. I'm 37 and I fancied an XJ when I bought my XF, my heart was just taken with the 'S' version and the power/torque figures. Drives like a dream!

that photo still makes me sad after all these months - you put soooo much time and effort into that car. It's alway sad to see the early demise of a well-loved car, but as we've discussed many times since the day of the crash, a 40-tonne truck would have done far more damage to any of your previous cars. I shudder to think of what would have happened to the Golf
Just pick on something smaller next time....
Back on topic - I often wonder when I'm a passenger in OGR4M's Jag whether people are looking and thinking "aw look - that old bloke's letting his son drive his Jag...."

I parked mine on my youngest sisters drive some while back. Her neighbour said in conversation with her later what a beautiful Jaguar your dad drives.
I had an XF SV8 for a while a couple of years back. A few work colleagues would make comments about my "grandad" car. I was 34.
While the comments were a bit annoying it wasn't what made me sell it. Own whatever you like, as long as you are happy to doesn't matter what others think really.
I will certainly consider owning another Jag one day, classic or modern.

Largely forgotten now the SV8 , again never driven an XF but I remember looking around the SV8 and the wheels in particular really looked the part . I shall have to bone up on the Production Figures but there couldn't have been many ?While the comments were a bit annoying it wasn't what made me sell it. To look at this from a different angle, I am 35 so a similar age to many posting here, currently on my second Jaguar and considering a third.
For me, the question is not, am I too young for a Jag, but rather, can I honestly describe myself as "young" anymore? I feel I've just about grown into Jaguar ownership nicely

Whats the 3.0 v6 like in the x type? Good engine? A re the diffs a worry?
I had a 3.0 manual X Type. The engine is okay. Revs hard but gearing is a bit tall to exploit it, though makes for a relaxed cruiser. Sounds a bit whiny, which is odd as the AJV6 sounded meaty in the S Type and Duratec V6 on which is was based sounded lovely in my old Ford Cougar.Managed 36 MPG on a run up the M1 once, which I was quite impressed with; around 28 in general driving.
Driveline shunt was a feature of the AWD system, which meant careful clutch use was necessary. I suspect its dual mass flywheel wasn't so healthy and it's something the auto would hide, though the auto in the X Type is fairly horrible. Steering good and rear bias AWD excellent - very sure footed and neutral in colder conditions. The diff/transfer box will whine ever so slightly, which I was concerned about, but a Jag specialist said it was fine. The cooling duct is plastic and stands proud of the underside of the car; they all rip off eventually, which starves the transfer boxes of cooling. Worth replacing if you find one is missing.
