Schizachyrium scoparium or Little Bluestem is a native warm season bunch grass growing to a height of 3 to 5 feet.

It is one of the best grasses for nesting habitat for grassland bird species. Seeds are consumed by upland game birds and songbirds as well.

It has been known to spread rhizomatously. It grows best in full sun on well drained mesic to dry sites.

It is the larval host or nectar source for Dusted Skipper, Indian Skipper, Crossline Skipper and Ottoe Skipper butterflies.

Found throughout the United States and Canada.
