Colic is when an otherwise healthy baby cries or fusses frequently for no clear reason. Few parents are prepared or aware of what to do when their baby has colic, and little seems to help soothe their crying. It is firstly important to remember:

  • You didn’t cause the colic, so try not to feel guilty
  • Colic will go away. Most babies outgrow it by the time they are 3 to 4 months old
  • Just because your baby has colic doesn’t mean they’re unhealthy
  • Comforting them is often a question of trying out various methods and pursuing the ones that work – infants respond differently to comforting when they have colic.
  • Contact your baby’s doctor if your baby’s crying is mixed with a fever, vomiting, loose or bloody stools, or decreased movement, or if your baby’s crying or behaviour changes all of a sudden. (https://bit.ly/3jv0InW )

Although colic doesn’t cause any short-term or long-term problems for your baby, it can be difficult for parents. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or frustrated, it’s important to ask for help. The Omega Local Choice Pharmacy in Northdale (Pietermaritzburg) is here for you!
