28 THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 4, 1948 East Chicago Officer Shot Hammond, Aug. 3 (Spl.) -Hammond police are waiting for Louis Lindinger, 26 years old, East Chicago policeman, to recover sufficiently in St. Margaret Hospital from a serious bullet wound in the right side before questioning him about circumstances that led to his shooting by Miss Nilene Clara Zajko, 24, Hammond, in Lindinger's parked auto. woman, formerly employed as a waitress in a restaurant near the East Chicago go police station where Lindinger was stationed for four years, said she WAS "playing" Lindinger's caliber pistol when it was discharged a accidentally. Policemen Ralph Kuhn and Herman Funk, cruising past the intersection where Lindinger's car was parked, heard a shot and saw the officer tumble from the auto.

Miss Zajko sped away in Lindinger's car and was captured four blocks away. She said she fled because of fright. Lindinger is married. 4 Bound To Jury On Bootleg Count Four men accused of possessIng gallons of bootleg whisky yesterday were bound over to the Federal Grand Jury here by United States Commissioner Asa J. Smith.

They were arrested June 18 at Mi Muncie when the liquor, contained in quart fruit jars, was found in their cars. They are Marson G. Wright, 29 years old; Walter Huff, 27, and Hermit H. Pierce, 40, all of Muncie, and David Stephens, 39, of Rural Route 1, Farmland. Howard Caughran, United States district attorney, said the men refused to reveal where they obtained the moonshine.

They are charged with failure to pay Federal taxes on the whisky. All men were released on $1,000 bond. Mrs. Victor Salb Dies; Native Of Mt. Vernon Mrs.

Florence Salb, 54. years old, 1450 College Avenue, died yesterday in St. Francis Hospital. A native of Mt. Vernon, Mrs.

Salb had lived here 16 years and was a member of the Central Avenue Methodist Church. Survivors include the husband, Victor Salb; a daughter, Betty J. Herndon; a son, Richard M. Salb, all of Indianapolis; the mother, Mrs. Emma Zergibel, Mt.

Vernon, and a brother, Charles R. Zergibel, Nashville, Tenn. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the Moore Mortuaries Colonial Chapel, Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. George Fletcher Dies; Operated Machine Shop Funeral services for George Harden Fletcher, 69 years old, 2818 South Rybolt Avenue, who died Monday after a heart attack, will be held at 10 a.m.

tomorrow in the Conkle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Glen Haven Cemetery. A native of Thurman, Fletcher had operated a machine shop in his home for many years. He had lived here 38 years. Survivors include the widow, Mrs.

Tessie Fletcher; a son, ArFletcher; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Brinkman, all of Indianapolis; 12 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Charles E. Jones Charles E. Jones, 68 years old, 6128 Rockville Road, Wayne Township teacher and building 'contractor, died yesterday at his home.

During his teaching career Mr. Jones taught in schools in Ben Davis, Bridgeport, a wood and Flackville. For 20 years he taught a Sunday school class at the West Michigan Street Methodist Church where he was a. member. He also was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge.

Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Kate Jones; two sons, George Jones and Alfred K. Jones, all of Indianapolis, and a brother, Harry B. Jones of Muskogee, Okla. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m.

tomorrow in Royster Askin Funeral Home. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery, Mrs. John Maier Mrs. Christine Maier, 69 years old, 1306 North Parker Avenue, died yesterday in St. Vincent's Hospital.

native of Fryburg, Mrs. Maier lived here 41 years and was a member of the St. Philip Neri Catholic Church and the altar society of the church. Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Friday in Grinsteiners Funeral Home and at 9 a.m.

in St. Philip Church. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Survivors include the husband, John Maier; three sons, Victor, Ernest and Norman Maier; a daughter, Mrs. Virginia Cafouros, all of Indianapolis; three sisters, a brother and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Jody Johnston Mrs. Irene Johnston, 58 years old, a lifelong resident of Indianapolis, died yesterday in her home, 901 West 11th Street. She was a member of the Zion Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m.

Friday in the Jacobs Brothers West Side Chapel. Burial will be in New Crown Cemetery. Survivors include the husband, Jody Johnston; a daughter, Mrs. Altora Davis, Indianapolis; a son, Alvin Steel, Cleveland, a sister, Mrs. Harry Reese, Indianapolis, and one grandson.

Forests Face Worst Fire Hazard, Warning Bedford, Aug. 3 Indiana will face the worst forest fire hazard in years this fall as result of heavy growth this of small vegetation, Rudolph H. Grabow, Bedford, "United States Forest Service supervisor, said today. The forester explained that abnormal rainfall has greatly speeded growth of light vegetation, thus providing more potential fuel toro fall and early winter fires. Grabow said that to date this year 21 fires, all man caused, have occurred in the Hoosier National Forest.

A total of 222.4 acres of land was burned over, destroying the fertility which nature is producing and causing much damage to young timber. Retired Librarian To Be Honored More than 50 civic and business will attend a luncheon in leaders, Miss Ethel Cleland, former head of the Business Branch Library, at noon tomorrow in the Lincoln. Sponsored by the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, the luncheon program will include presentation by the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce of a certificate to Miss Cleland for outstanding service to business. Patrons of the Business Branch Library and others who would like to attend luncheon may make reservations with the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce. Miss Cleland, who organized Business Branch Library in 1917, retired July 1 after 31 years' service.

She is a nationally known business librarian and researcher. Gaming Loss Report Leads Three To Court Three men arrested yesterday after one of them told police he lost $157 in a crap game in the Pyramid Club, Indiana Avenue, will appear this morning in Municipal Court, Room 4. Earl Howard, 56 years old, 1038 North West Street, reported he lost the money to Arnold Bryant, 47, 724 Blake Street, alleged operator of the game. Bryant and Eugene Ray, 43, 2828 Indianapolis Avenue, whom police identified as president of the club, were charged with keeping a gaming house. Howard was slated for gaming.
