EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored stipple engraving depicts the Eastern Teaberry, scientifically known as Gaultheria procumbens. The illustration was created by the renowned botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redoute and engraved by Tassaert for Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau's "Traite des Arbres et Arbustes," published in Paris between 1804 and 1819. The Eastern Teaberry, also known as Checkerberry or Boxberry, is a low-growing shrub native to North America. It is characterized by its small, waxy, red or pink berries that resemble cranberries and are highly prized for their tart, refreshing taste. The plant thrives in cool, shady forests and is often found in the understory of hardwood forests from Quebec to Georgia and south to Florida and Texas. The intricate details of the Eastern Teaberry's leaves, stems, and berries are beautifully captured in this engraving. The delicate veining and texture of the leaves are evident, as are the tiny hairs that cover the stems and berries. The engraving also highlights the distinctive red berries, which are arranged in clusters along the stems. The Eastern Teaberry was used by indigenous peoples for medicinal and culinary purposes. The leaves and berries were brewed into a tea, which was used to treat a variety of ailments, including diarrhea, dysentery, and fevers. The berries were also eaten fresh or dried and used as a flavoring agent in puddings and pies. This stunning botanical illustration is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world and the skill of the artists and engravers who captured it for posterity.
