Spinal disks are rubbery cushions that lie between the bones in your spine. Each disk consists of a soft center (nucleus) surrounded by a tougher exterior (annulus). A herniated disk occurs when a portion of the nucleus is pushed through a crack in the annulus. Symptoms may occur if the herniation touches or presses on a nerve.
