I’ll tell you one thing I know, and you promise not to make fun of me. Deal? Great. Breadfruit is not really bread. Shocker, I know! But hey; everyone has to live with disappointment. On June 24, 2016, I took a visit down to an oriental market around the surprisingly populated Port St. Lucie city of Florida (“surprising” because that area has almost nothing going on), and I believe it was called Bravo Supermarkets. I was on a quest to find some specific exotic ingredients, which is why I visited, but I was greeted with a surprising piece of produce that caught my curiosity as much as my eye. Friends, meet the dragon’s egg (well, technically the breadfruit): Now this hefty son of a bitch cost me around six dollars, which is expensive considering I didn’t even know what the hell I was supposed to do with one. Was it even ripe? Considering what I had at home, I learned that the breadfruit is called such because its flavor when ripe is comparable to freshly baked bread. Also, the texture is somewhat fluffy. Like other fruits such as papayas and bananas, breadfruits are treated like vegetables when unripe and like fruits when ripe. This is because of the starch content in unripe fruits. And to think, I didn’t think that Port St. Lucie had anything exciting to offer! Alas, the breadfruit was a highlight to my day. At this point, you are definitely wondering what I conjured up with this piece of glory. I found a recipe from some Malaysian cook online that highlighted the pairing of coconut with breadfruit. Seeing as I had a fresh coconut lodged on a corner of my pantry, I blitzed this up with the breadfruit and sweetened the pulp with maple syrup. I coated a dish with a sweet crust before filling it with the breadfruit pulp. The result? Half-ripe and somewhat sweet breadfruit coconut bars! Look, I will never claim to be an expert when it comes to playing with fire. But you never learn new things until you try. I prepared a batch of these bars for a friend of mine who had just released a short story on Amazon; did you know that you can make your own short stories and publish them free? With Kindle Direct Publishing, you can write whatever the hell you want and force others to purchase it… all for the price of some effort. I think that’s great; perhaps I should put this diary up for sale. People would buy it, right?
Long story short (and this was a short story), breadfruit is a neat fruit. It is by no means anything I’m going to fill my counter with (as that would beg questions from my neighbors, probably assuming I am performing black magic or some shit), but I had a lot of fun exploring its possibilities. Visit your local Bravo and pick up a breadfruit today! But make sure it’s ripe, or you’ll be very disappointed like I was.
