Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus-castus) is a shrub native to the Mediterranean and southern Europe. It is also known as the chasteberry, Abraham's balm, or monk's pepper because it was planted in monasteries to help monks better endure celibacy. It effectively reduced their desires, which is reflected in its botanical name, Agnus castus, meaning chaste lamb. It typically grows to a height of 1.5 to 3 meters and has characteristic long, palmately compound leaves with seven to ten leaflets. The blossoms of Chaste Tree are small, ranging from purple to blue, and form long spikes.

Chaste Tree has been known for over 2500 years. The earliest records of its use date back to ancient Greece and Rome. The fruits of Chaste Tree contain many alkaloids, flavonoids, and substances that serve as precursors to steroid hormones. In other words, they behave in the body similarly to some female hormones and are suitable for women with hormonal disorders. This property is crucial for regulating the menstrual cycle and alleviating symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Furthermore, Chaste Tree is used to support fertility in women and as a means to calm and reduce stress and anxiety.

Why choose oil from Albanian mountains?

Essential oils from wild mountain herbs have several advantages over conventionally grown oils. Here are some of the main reasons why they are exceptional:

  • Stronger chemical composition - wild herbs are exposed to various influences such as extreme temperatures, windy conditions, high altitudes, and consumption by animals. These conditions stimulate the production of essential oils and increase the concentration of active substances, making them more potent and effective.
  • Absence of pesticides and chemicals - wild-growing herbs have no contact with pesticides or chemicals often used in conventional cultivation. This means that the oils from these herbs are naturally pure and free from unwanted substances.
  • Hand harvesting - due to the inaccessibility of the mountains, harvesting is done manually, which means more care and attention is given to individual plants. This allows the selection of the best plants and their harvest at the optimal time, positively impacting the quality of the oils.
  • Unique aroma and composition - plants growing in the mountains often have specific environmental conditions that affect their aroma and chemical composition. Oils from wild mountain herbs have a unique and authentic character that cannot be fully reproduced in conventionally grown variants.
