Unemployed or unemployable?

Unemployed or unemployable?

The companies need good people to work, people need good companies to work. Still, there is unemployability and company have vacancies always!!

There are more than 3 lakhs student graduating in a city every year. They graduate in different streams like, Engineering, BBA, BA, the streams are un limited. However, there are only around 2500 graduates who get a job. Out of these 2500 people not even 15% people do a job they like. They do the job as they want to start earning for supporting their family, repay their loan, to manage their own expenses and the reason are many.

Even after working so hard and giving 3-5 years of their lives in educating themselves, students don't get a job. I have seen a very bright student who has scorded more than 90% in academics but is still not able to get a job. On the other hand I have seen student who have not even completed their education are doing good in the industry and are on senior position. It was said by a Managing Director of an IT company that, “There is no unemployment but people are unemployable.”

Being unemployed is different from being unemployable.

So what does Unemployable means?

Being unemployable means, the job seeker does not posses the qualities which the company is lookig for.

The reason of being unemployable could be as follows:

  1. Communication Skills: You see any job post, Excellent Communication Skills are the first and foremost thing which the employer looks for. No matter how good you are technically. If you cannot communicate your technical skills you are out of the league.
  2. Body Language: It is rightly said that “actions speaks louder than words”, in the same way your actions/ body language plays a major role when you go for the interview. The interviewer takes a decision of whether you are fit for the work culture and the job within 30 seconds of you entering the cabin.
  3. Confidence / Attitude: There is a thin line between confidence and over confidence. If you enter with an attitude of being the only person who will crack the interview, will portray a different image of yours. Whereas, the thought that, I will give my best in the interview will have a different impact.
  4. Fail to Learn: Employers, always give chance to people who showcase their capability of going through the learning curve. In spite of your low grades, if you are capable enough to make the employer believe that you are a person who is ready to learn and execute things, you may get selected. If there are no incidences in your life, which has made you learn not limited to academics then, it gets difficult for a employer to understand your adaptability or the flexibility to the situations.
  5. Lack of “Team Player” Quality: When you are applying as a fresher, you ought to showcase your technical skills and a lot of soft skills, humanity, attitude of learning and team spirit. Employers always ask a question to freshers which is, “If given a chance then you would choose becoming a team leader or a team player?” If you feel that answering the question with “I want to become a team leader” will add up to your positive points, then you are absolutely wrong. Every fresher needs to understand a good team leader is first a good team member.

So now, when you go for an interview the next time, ask a question to yourself, Are you Employable? You may be really good with academics or not very good with academics but can you sell your self to the interviewer. Can you prove that you are best candidate for the company? If yes, then go for it, if no then, get prepared and appear the interview.
