Simplifying ASCI Guidelines for Influencer Advertising on Digital Media

In June 2021, ASCI finally released guidelines for Influencers using their social media accounts to advertise everything and anything. It has to be noted that influencers play a significant role in shaping consumer perceptions and driving engagement, simply because their authority, knowledge, position or relationship with the audience.

The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) wanted to ensure transparency and ethical practices, thus established guidelines for influencers.

ASCI emphasizes the importance of influencers clearly disclosing promotional content. If you're promoting a product or service, make it explicit by using hashtags like #Ad, #Sponsored, or #PaidPromotion. This helps your audience distinguish between your regular content and sponsored posts.

Be truthful about your experiences with the promoted product or service. ASCI encourages influencers to share genuine opinions, ensuring that your audience can trust your recommendations. If there are limitations or potential side effects, disclose them to maintain transparency.

ASCI guidelines stress the importance of respecting consumer privacy. If you're sharing user-generated content or testimonials, ensure that you have the necessary permissions. Additionally, avoid posting private information without consent.

ASCI discourages misleading endorsements. Ensure that your statements about the product or service are accurate, and do not make exaggerated claims. This builds credibility and trust with your audience.

Different social media platforms have unique features for disclosures. Be aware of these and utilize them effectively. For example, on Instagram, use the "Paid partnership with" feature to disclose collaborations.

ASCI encourages influencers to educate their audience about the nature of influencer marketing. Share insights on how collaborations work, why you choose certain brands, and how partnerships contribute to the content creation process.

Stay updated on ASCI's guidelines, as they may evolve with changes in the digital landscape. Regularly review the guidelines to ensure compliance with the latest recommendations.

 Clear communication is crucial. Avoid using vague terms or ambiguous language that might confuse your audience regarding the promotional nature of your content. Transparency builds trust.

If your audience has questions or concerns about a sponsored post, address them openly.
