The sea that shimmers and sparkles from the warm rays of the sun…is distinct from the vastness of the skies above. Yet, as one looks upon the waves that sway gently in the distance…the ocean and the sky are immersed and entwined…they have become one.

This immersion is the horizon – nature’s bounty…yet the serene visual beauty can become an entrepreneurs’ bottleneck. It is human nature to perceive something that is distinct from reality – and it is human nature to see what the mind wants without looking at what the brain fears.

It is the silent business killer that can strike without warning – and it is out there right now! It exists in businesses where they least expect to find it. It can bring the biggest and most successful enterprises to their knees! Complacency is an intrinsic flaw that prevents organisations from pushing beyond the status quo to achieve exceptional successes.

Nokia was the first company to create a cellular network in the world. In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, it was the global leader in mobile phones. With the arrival of the Internet, other mobile companies started understanding that data, not voice, was the future of communication.

Nokia did not desire to lead the drastic change in user experience. The company overestimated the strength of its brand and believed they could arrive late in the smartphone game and succeed. In 2007 Steve Jobs launched the iPhone, a phone without a keyboard, which was revolutionary at the time. In 2008 Nokia finally made the decision to compete with Android, but it was too late. Their products weren’t competitive enough.
