Words have consequences. At Student Minds, we stand against all forms of discrimination and transphobia.
We call on the Prime Minister to apologise and reflect on the harm caused by these comments.
We know that recent events might have brought up lots of difficult emotions. If you’ve been affected by the recent events following the murder of Brianna Ghey and transphobic comments made by politicians and the media, we want to let you know that we are here for you. To Trans students and the wider Trans community, you are not alone 🧡
Do you believe it is responsible for you to be signposting people to Mermaids while the organisation is under a statutory inquiry by The Charity Commission to determine whether there is “serious systemic failing in the charity’s governance and management”?
What is Normal?
This is always decided by a majority. When you belong to a large group, you are significant and strong as an individual. Incidentally, this also applies to the releationship between political forces and communities of states.
In order not to be excluded from a strong community we deny ourselves and make ourselves small. Much is written and talked about tolerance. Beautiful speeches and actions do not go together.
But there are also many examples where people are doing something against exclusion and oppression. Tolerant behavior is an educational goal. The other educational goal is to promote self-esteem and self-confidence.
All those who experience exclusion and discrimination should say to themselves at least twice a day: "I am a strong girl / a strong boy." or "I am a strong woman / a strong man.".

As a society, we must adamantly reject any notion that pedophilia is an acceptable or valid sexual orientation. The safety and well-being of our children are non-negotiable.
Pedophilia is not merely an alternative sexual orientation; it is a reprehensible and heinous crime against the most vulnerable members of our society. It exposes innocent children to unimaginable harm, robbing them of their childhood and leaving scars that may never heal.
We must not normalize or excuse such predatory behavior under the guise of "orientation." Human beings have the capacity to control their actions and impulses, and it is our responsibility as a society to ensure that children are protected from those who would seek to exploit them.
Let us stand united in unequivocally condemning pedophilia and advocating for the safety and protection of our children. Together, we can create a world where every child can grow up free from the fear of exploitation and abuse.

This is a NO-NO-NO position that can never be accepted by any sane society, no matter how politically correct they want to appear.
What is fundamentally wrong is essentially wrong.
These are adults, preying on minors for goodness sake!

"Yes, the Bill of Rights provides us the ability to think whatever we want to think and say what we believe. But it does not absolve us of responsibility for our words or our actions. We are all responsible for what we say (and type online). If we seek to threaten others, if we put others at risk, we are accountable. This is particularly true when our words are designed to harm others based on their race, religion, nationality, gender, or political beliefs."

This teacher won an award for being an outstanding Texas educator. She also resigned on the same day.
➡ Sometimes we try to separate the politics from education but as "social media administrators," standardized tests, watered-down curriculum, and the battle between competing moral/ethical/religious values on BOTH sides of the political spectrum overtake teacher respect and control, it is hard not to talk about it.
The profession as a whole is already falling apart from decades of systemic failure and teachers are burning out or retiring early at ludicrously high rates.
Now, teachers are being targeted and harassed just for their personal beliefs and identities, or are being forced to lie to parents about so many things, thus placing them in difficult legal positions. 🤔
➡ Whether you personally believe in supporting the LGBTQ community or not (this teacher identifies as Queer) the fact of the matter is that we have countless students and teachers in our classrooms who ARE.
As we will point out in a future podcast episode with Yehee Son, educators feel attacked and unsupported enough as it is but denying who they are and then restricting what they can and cannot teach to students who also feel isolated and alone only exacerbates the problem.
➡ Our job as educators is to teach students, no matter who or what they are. Whether you agree with who or what they are is irrelevant because these students exist and not going to stop existing just because you don't support them or the books they read.
Your job is to support teachers, no matter who or what they are, in that endeavor. If society keeps alienating teachers and forcing them to leave, who will be left to teach the students?
I just don't understand why we have to make the concept of creating a safe space for students of all backgrounds political. It shouldn't be. 🤷♂️

Making my debut over here at LinkedIn, so I thought I'd share my most recent blog post from January about the important role teachers play in the classroom in combatting discrimination.
