In leadership, the little things make a huge difference, and the leaders who understand this are the ones who ultimately lead great companies. Some people take these things for granted, but believe me when leaders show the simplest of gratitude to their team, it inspires everyone to give their best. It could be something as simple as saying hello, writing a handwritten note stating you did an excellent job today or remembering your employees' names when greeting them. Leadership is all about people; it's about inspiring people to believe that the impossible is possible. It's about developing and building people to perform at heights they never imagined. It's about positively impacting your community, company, department, employees, and, by extension, the world. According to Robyn Benincasa, as a leader, you don't inspire your team by showing them how amazing you are. Instead, you inspire them by showing how amazing they are. Ahh, some of my thoughts exactly! A big Shout out to the retail leaders and team members driving the SLEIGH with gigantic hauls in malls this holiday season. You are all incredibly talented and are some of the strongest, most selfless and giving kinds of people!🤗 Thank you for taking time and interest in becoming product experts every day, thank you for showing up even when you could stay in bed all day with that pounding headache, thank you for covering your team mate when a sick call comes in even when you have a million things to do on your personal to-do list, thank you for going above and beyond with your recommendations and making strangers feel heard, seen and feel accomplished! YOU know your stuff, you are important and you are so, so appreciated💝🙏🏽✨

Could I sit here and write about being trapped in retail? Could I describe how it's SO terrible? Could I tell you all about how we can't get out because it's all we know? Sure, I could. But I don't. I don't on purpose. I don't because I love retail. I love the merchandising, the connection with people, and - at a most basic level - the fashion. I choose to highlight the skill set needed to be good at retail, because the skill set is varied and complex and dynamic. And everyone thinks they know all about the industry because they go shopping, but they don't. - This comment popped up on The Voice of the Frontline this morning: "I don’t think everyone that works retail does it because they love the rush. Some simply can’t get any other job because it’s all they know." This comment was on an edition of the newsletter about how to reframe your work when talking to family & friends about missing holiday gatherings. My advice was - if you lean into the positive aspects of your job: the rush, the people, the goals (instead of going negative) your family may stop pushing you so hard to attend everything. I don't know if this commenter has ever worked retail. I don't know if they think I'm an idiot. Of course, not everyone in retail loves it. But guess what? I know plenty of engineers, accountants, and corporate suits that don't like their jobs either. The difference is that the general public hears those job titles and thinks, "important". And when they hear, "retail", they think, Whatever Throwaway Easy Retail means folding t-shirts all day. But that's not true. And surprise - some people actually love it. Because it's dynamic. Because it's running a business and developing teams. Because it's people. I help you and you help me and that's how we get through this. And we're better after than we were before. So, if you want to hear how bad retail is, follow someone else. I'm here to tell you how skilled retail leaders are. How totally completely badass they are. How you can take that big, beautiful skill set of yours and do anything in the world with it. So, yes, commenter, some people "can't get out of retail because it's all they know." But what if they discovered that "all they know" puts them ahead of the game? That's why I'm here. To show you and everyone else - Why those of us in retail, run the world. #leadership #retail

Recruiting Leader @ Zapier | Former Educator | Advocate for job seekers, demystifying recruiting, and making the workplace more equitable for everyone!!
Promotions every few years can mean that someone is an excellent employee. Or it can mean they lucked into a rapidly growing company or benefited from favoritism. Staying in the same role for many years can mean someone was only a middle of the road employee. Or it can mean that they worked for a flat company that expanded roles and responsibilities without changing titles, or that they remained loyal to a shrinking company, or that they stayed stagnant at work so they could get a degree at the same time. Jobhopping can mean someone underperforms and gets terminated frequently. Or it can mean they deliver great results and get recruited to take on bigger and higher paying jobs. Someone may apply to a more junior role because they couldn't cut it at higher levels. Or they may have realized that love and excel at other work and want to be in a job they love so they can stay for a long time. Maybe that "thought leader" on Linked is a dream to work with. Or maybe they are awful and just happen to be good at personal branding. The reality is that nothing in a career trajectory is inherently a "green" or "red" flag. What matters is the context. If you like what you see, but there are a few "red flags", talk to the person. You can even email them to learn more. If they look amazing, don't lower the bar just because of where they've worked and overlook red flags in the interview. Do your due diligence and hold them to the same bar as other candidates. Resumes and LinkedIn profiles are marketing tools. That doesn't say anything about their ability to do the job. Remove biased criteria from your job descriptions and rubrics. Get to know people before jumping to conclusions around their motivations. Assess for actual skills instead of just people who can talk the talk. If a company with well-paying jobs is complaining about it being hard to find great talent, I'd suggest re-evaluating your processes and revisiting declined candidates. You've probably missed a lot of really amazing people along the way.

If you can hand someone keys while you send another person to lunch while you answer the phone in an upbeat, lovely voice, AND override a coupon... You may be a retail leader. IYKYK. Keep killing it, leaders. You're all the best! #leadership #retail
