๐ Empowering the Future Workforce: #GACCSouth and the #GACATT Program ๐ In an era where the skills gap continues to widen, is the traditional 4-year college route still the best option for everyone? Yesterday I ran my first in person event since pre-COVID, Shaping the Future: Developing Emerging Tech Talent through Graduate Apprenticeships. This was a roundtable discussion, hosted by one of our leading Graduate Apprenticeship employer partners, Forrit, at their HQ in Edinburgh. Forrit CEO Peter Proud FRSE and Edinburgh Napier University Graduate Apprentice Alumnus Anna Holko spoke about their experiences and successes with the GA programme. There was some very engaging discussion, which could only have been derived from an in-person event. Some of my learning points were: 1. Industry is very interested in developing talent through Graduate Apprenticeships, but there are a myriad of challenges in setting programmes up for success, much of which centres around support and succession planning. These challenges are far from insurmountable, but learning from successful programmes such as the Forrit Apprenticeship Scheme is important 2. Some apprentices once they have completed their degree will stay, and move quickly into leading roles. Anna Holko and many others from Edinburgh Napier University are testament to this. Some however will move onto other employers. Despite this, you will still be making a massive contribution to bridging industry skills gaps. Set up a succession plan so you have a "conveyor belt" of Graduate Apprentices, and you will rarely be short of both junior and senior staff in your business. 3. Following on from point 1...we need to do this more often! Thank you so much to everyone who came along yesterday. It was hopefully a success for all of those in attendance. Watch this space for more to come! #event #apprenticeships #tech

๐ Adapting the Apprenticeship Model: Lessons from the US for Europe's Future Workforce ๐ ๐ฃ A recent study by Multiverse and the Burning Glass Institute titled "Untapped Potential: How new apprenticeship approaches will increase access to economic opportunity" sheds light on a transformative vision for the workforce, with crucial insights for Europe. The study identifies an impressive potential of 830,000 new apprenticeship opportunities annually in the US, which could enhance earnings by $28.5 billion yearly! ๐ Europe's Opportunity: While the study focuses on the US, its implications for Europe are profound. With its rich history of apprenticeships, Europe stands at a critical juncture to redefine and expand this model to meet the evolving demands of the future of work: ๐ Reshaping Workforce Dynamics: The US model highlights a shift from traditional apprenticeships to encompass a broader range of professional roles. This approach can be a blueprint for Europe to bridge skill gaps, particularly in technology and service sectors, adapting to the digital era. ๐ Empowering the Underrepresented: The study notes the significant impact on underemployed groups and those without degrees. For Europe, this approach can enhance social mobility, especially for its diverse population, fostering a more inclusive workforce. ๐ From the US to Europe: Europe can learn from the US experience to develop more flexible, skill-based apprenticeship programs. This will not only address current labor market needs but also anticipate future skills requirements, ensuring a resilient and competitive economy. ๐ก A Call to Action: business leaders have the opportunity to champion this model in Europe. By embracing innovative apprenticeship programs, we can unlock potential, drive economic growth, and build a more equitable workforce. #FutureOfWork #Apprenticeships #WorkforceDevelopment #EuropeanWorkforce #Innovation #SocialMobility
