Today is #MillionsMissing for International #MEAwarenessDay and I encourage everyone to reflect on what this disease says about us as a society: - worst level of quality of life of all diseases - worst level of funding of all diseases - worst recovery rate of all diseases (5%) - only 25% will be able to continue to work - 75% women (huge gender healthcare equity issue) - patients still being stigmitised, neglected, medically abused - stuck in “the worst industrialised medical scandal” (George Monbiot) And now with Long Covid, ME is growing…400%. Combined, there are now over 1K clinical papers that prove that these are multi-system, multi-organ complex chronic diseases….and that solving it is going to be the human equivalent of solving climate change. And yet.. - UK govt is winding down funding for researchers (“Prof Danny Altmann: because..shock horror we haven’t solved it in two years!”) - US is basically pouring $1B down the drain. (This could have changed everything if power systems weren’t stopping it from getting it to the right people with lived experience). So if govt and healthcare is still failing..maybe purpose-led business can help us? - > Do you think govts should be warning citizens that ME is a known outcome of covid infections? - > Can we really call ourselves inclusive businesses…society whilst this continues to go on, hidden from view? -> What are you professionally doing to understand and design for the energy impaired - their needs, injustices and traumas? -> How do we help the severe & very severe ME get access to healthcare when they live in their beds 24/7. Their GPs don’t know they exist and they can’t vote, they resemble someone dying but not enough for doctors to help with even end of life care?
