Axel Nimmerjahn has been promoted to full professor at #SalkInstitute for his groundbreaking work in #neuroscience and #biophotonics. Congratulations, Axel! Nimmerjahn leads an interdisciplinary research team funded by the National Institutes of Health’s Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative, a national effort to investigate overarching principles of brain circuit function, including sensation, perception, decision-making, and motor control. The five-year project at Salk is centered on astrocytes, a type of non-neuronal brain cell, and how they process and modulate neuronal signals to support overall brain function. https://lnkd.in/gZ8HvHe6

Thank you to everyone who supported Salk’s inaugural Rising Stars Symposium🌟 and a Diverse Inclusive Scientific Community Offering a Vision for an Ecosystem Reimagined (#DISCOVER)🔬Symposium. These programs help further diversify Salk and support current and future STEM researchers from underrepresented populations at all stages of the research trajectory through research presentations, mentorship opportunities, and development of novel recruitment mechanisms. We received many impressive applications for both symposiums that were reviewed by a diverse panel, and after much discussion, eight applicants were selected as rising stars, and ten future postdocs were invited to present at the DISCOVER symposium. Congratulations to our awardees! Stay tuned for Salk EDGE (Elevate Diversity in Graduate Education), a two-week summer program that aims to equip graduate students for competitive careers in academic science. Thanks to a generous $5M gift from the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation, Salk is launching an innovative research initiative to tackle pancreatic cancer. Led by Professors Dannielle Engle, Ronald Evans, & Reuben Shaw, this initiative will establish a novel pipeline from patients to the laboratory and back to the clinic. The approach will provide a unique opportunity to uncover new diagnostics and therapies for pancreatic cancer. #PancreaticCancerResearch #InnovativeResearch #SalkInstitute #PaulMAngellFamilyFoundation https://lnkd.in/gNJ7TRTx

Congratulations to Salk Professor Tatyana Sharpee and Assistant Professor Danielle Engle! They are recipients of the 'Prebys Research Heroes' Program, which celebrates female scientists pursuing 'high-risk, high-reward' research projects. Salk President Gerald Joyce is quoted: “We are deeply grateful to the The Conrad Prebys Foundation Foundation for these generous grants, Dannie and Tanya are both highly deserving recipients for the critical research each is pursuing.” https://lnkd.in/gDCjQnhJ #WomenInScience #ScienceAndResearch #LeadersInScience #SalkInstitute
