The Lakeshore Park administration building, which opened in 1886 as part of a mental hospital and was designed by architect W.H. Cussack of Nashville, was recently renovated for Knoxville Parks and Recreation offices.

Lakeshore Mental Health Institute being torn down to make way for the Lakeshore Park redevelopment and expansion in Knoxville, Tenn.

The Chota Building is demolished Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014, at Lakeshore Park. The work is part of a $1.5 million project that will raze nine surplus buildings that were once part of the Lakeshore Mental Health Institute campus.

Lakeshore Park's Marble Hall was once the stone church when the park was the site of the state's Lakeshore Mental Health Institute. Now it hosts St. John's Episcopal Cathedral's weekly "Sundays at the Shore" service from June to August.

The south end of Marble Hall features a rose stained-glass window made by former patients of the now-closed Lakeshore Mental Health Institute.
