Redesigned Kia Logo Unveiled

History & Evolution of the New Kia Emblem

2022 Kia Soul rear view

There’s a new Kia logo you’ll be seeing a lot of on your favorite auto manufacturer’s vehicles like the Seltos, Soul, and Sportage. If you haven’t heard and seen it yet, you should check it out! The new Kia logo is an italicized script spelling of the word “KIA,” not unlike how the old logo was. But replacing the more traditional, bolded text inside an oval from the old Kia emblem is a more fluid, dynamic freestanding word that is said to embody “symmetry,” “rhythm” and “rising.” Along with the new Kia symbol comes a new slogan: “Movement that inspires.” What else should you know about this Kia logo change and the Kia emblem that preceded it? Find out with Kia Delray!

What is a “KN” Car?

Since the redesign of Kia’s logo, many consumers have been confused by the updated styling and wondering what a “KN” car is. The confusion stems from the merging of the “I” and “A” in “Kia,” along with the lack of the line normally used to cross a capital “A.” Taken together, this makes the “IA” in Kia’s name look a bit like a backward “N.” While the text may be potentially confusing at first glance, Kia’s updated logo is not only more modern but also symbolic of constant motion (as the logo could be hand-drawn without lifting pen from paper) and forward progress, all fitting qualities for a brand so focused on innovation.

History of the Kia Logo’s Evolution Throughout the Years

  • 1944-1964: Kia began its journey as a brand not in the automotive space, but in the world of bicycles. The original Kia logo had three diamonds overlapped by a circular gear, inside which was a hexagon. Inside the hexagon was a rectangle with the word “KIA” spelled out in capital letters.
  • 1964-1986: The Kia “Q” logo was implemented during this period. Composed of a green circle with a diagonal line protruding from the top right corner, it looked like an upside-down letter “Q.”
  • 1986-1994: During this time period, Kia had been making cars for some time, and its logo was a stylized wordmark. The “K” consisted of a thick black line with a triangle sloping down to the right of it. The “I” and “A,” meanwhile, were made up of single thick lines wrapped into each letter shape. Over top of the “K” triangle and other two letters was what looked like a flying cloth or banner.
  • 1994-2012: This logo would remain in use by Kia for some time. It was made up of a red oval, inside which was the word “KIA” spelled out as a wordmark. Red was chosen as it was said to represent Kia’s passion and energy, while the white background was said to stand for purity and loyalty.
  • 2012-2021: The previous logo was refined slightly in 2012 with brighter red coloring and bolder, sharper lines.
