Easy Teacher Gift Idea- Wooden Post It Note Holder Made with xTool
Happy teacher appreciation week! I love making teacher gifts for my kids’ teachers. I have made a lot of things through out the years. This year I realized that even though I always make teacher gifts each year, I rarely give gifts to the middle school and high school teachers. I don’t know why I don’t usually give them things. Well I know one reason why, because each kid has 6-7 teachers and since I have 5 kids, that’s a LOT of teachers gifts. I decided that this year I wanted to make something for the middle school and high school teachers too. I came up with a super easy teacher gift idea, one that I could easily make lots of. I made these wooden Post It note holders with the xTool M1, and to make them extra special, I engraved their names, school name and the school’s mascot onto the Post It note holder.
If you are new to laser cutters, check out my xTool beginner’s guide.
This is how I made the wooden Post It note holder with xTool. I made up the Post It note holder in xTool Creative Space. It was super easy to create, I just used the rectangle shape under the insert button. I also made an SVG cut file, you can get that right here.
In XCS, I opened up the SVG file using the image button. Then I added the teacher’s names by using the text button. I used a variety of fonts, Better Together, Digs My Hart and Bernard MT Condensed. I changed up the leading (the space between the text lines), I made it between -2 and -5 depending on the font.
I then sized the name, clicked engraved for it and then positioned it onto the Post It note holder. I then added the school’s name and mascot. I found their logos on the school’s website and used it to create a SVG file so I could engrave it onto the Post It note holder. Once I got everything situated, I then highlighted the lines that I wanted to be cut, and pushed the cut button. The solid orange designs will be engraved and the purple lines will be cut when sent to the xTool. I sized the design to be 4.678 inches wide and 5.574 inches high. This make the center square right around 3.1 inches, perfect for a Post It. This size also makes it so you can make 2 complete Post It holders with one 12×12 plywood sheet.
I used a 3mm 12 x 12 basswood plywood for the Post It note holder. The light wood is perfect for engraving, it looks so good! I also used my air assist attachment, it helps with the cuts and prevents scorch marks on the wood.
Here are the wooden Post It note holders all cut out and ready to be put together.
Here are the other two schools my kids go to.
Each Post It note holder has two layers, the solid back piece and the front piece with the cut out and engravings.
I used E6000 glue and glued the two pieces together. I used painter’s tape on them to hold them together while the glue set.
I added some Post It notes and a Sharpie pen to complete the easy teacher gift.
And that’s it! Don’t they look so good?? I love how they turned out!
I added them into some cellophane bags, added a little note and they are all ready to go.
Here are all of the high school ones.
Here are the middle school ones, can you tell that orange is one of the school colors?!
Here are all of them ready to go to all the amazing teachers!
