'Like a bomb went off': Injured De Soto family describes horrific crash during family vacation
NEWS, IOWA’S NEWS LEADER. WELL, IT LOOKED LIKE A BOMB WENT OFF. THAT’S HOW A DE SOTO FAMILY DESCRIBES THE MOMENT A SEMI TRUCK CRASHED INTO THEM JUST OUTSIDE SALT LAKE CITY EARLIER THIS MONTH. THE COUPLE AND THEIR FATHER WERE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TRYING TO HELP ANOTHER CRASH VICTIM ON I-80. KCCI SENIOR REPORTER TODD MAGEL IS HERE WITH THE STORY OF THEIR RECOVERY AND A SALT LAKE CITY HOSPITAL. HI, TODD. WELL, JODI LAURA TYRONE WILLIAMS SAYS IT IS A MIRACLE THAT HIS WIFE AND FATHER IN LAW ARE STILL ALIVE. THEIR GOOD DEED TURNED INTO A TERRIBLE TRAGEDY. HE LOOKED LIKE A BOMB WENT OFF. HONESTLY, THERE WERE CAR PARTS EVERYWHERE. TYRONE WILLIAMS DESCRIBES THE HORROR OF NOVEMBER 6TH ON I-80, JUST OUTSIDE SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH. THE MOMENT A SEMI TRUCK HIT A SECOND PARKED TRUCK THAT HIT THEM AT FULL SPEED AND THEN SOMEBODY SAID, OH, --. AND I LOOK UP AND THERE’S A SEMI BARRELING DOWN ON US AND I JUMPED OVER THE GUARDRAIL AND SO DID THE OTHER GUYS AT. AND MY FATHER IN LAW AND WIFE GOT STRUCK BY THE PICKUP TRUCK THAT THE SEMI HIT. WILLIAMS HIS WIFE HEATHER, AND HER FATHER, DR. RON CORNELSON, WERE DRIVING BACK TO IOWA FROM A FAMILY VACATION IN YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK IN CALIFORNIA. THEY CAME UPON A CRASH JUST OUTSIDE SALT LAKE CITY AND GOT OUT TO HELP. THAT’S WHEN THE SEMI BARRELED INTO THE CRASH SCENE. TY WILLIAMS HAD A SPLIT SECOND TO JUMP OUT OF THE WAY. WHEN I CLIMBED BACK OVER THE BARRIER, I SAW MY FATHER IN LAW LAYING ON THE GROUND AND HE WAS SAYING, HELP ME, HELP ME, PLEASE. I’M HURT. AND I LOOKED OVER AND I SAW MY WIFE AND I KNEW I COULDN’T HELP HER. HIS 88 YEAR OLD FATHER IN LAW SUFFERED BROKEN LEGS, RIBS, PELVIS, TAILBONE AND A HEAD WOUND. HEATHER WAS ALSO CRITICALLY INJURED. THAT WHOLE SIDE OF HER FACE WAS REMOVED. SHE HER MANDIBLE WAS BROKEN IN FOUR PLACES. HER CHEEKBONE WAS BROKEN. SHE LOST HER RIGHT EYE. I MEAN, HER ALL HER UPPER PALATE IS ALL BROKEN DOWN. IT’S IT’S VERY EXTENSIVE. AND SHE’LL NEED SHE’LL NEED SURGERIES IN THE FUTURE FOR YEARS. THE FAMILY IS RECOVERING IN THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH MEDICAL CENTER. AND WILL BE THERE FOR WEEKS TO COME. BUT AS BAD AS THE CRASH WAS, WILLIAMS SAYS HIS INJURED FAMILY AGREES ON ONE THING. WE WOULD ALL DO IT AGAIN. WE’VE ALL SAID THAT TO EACH OTHER SINCE THIS THIS HAPPENED THAT WE’D ALL DO IT AGAIN. WILLIAMS IS SELF-EMPLOYED, SO FRIENDS AND DE SOTO HAVE SET UP A GOFUNDME ACCOUNT TO HELP WITH MEDICAL EXPENSES. HE SAYS HIS FATHER IN LAW IS SET TO RETURN TO CALIFORNIA IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS AND HE SAYS HE WILL STAY WITH HIS WIFE IN T

It looked like a "bomb went off" — that's how a De Soto man describes a crash in Utah on Nov. 6.Tyrone Williams, his wife Heather Williams, and her father, Ron Cornelsen, were driving back to Iowa from a family vacation in Yosemite National Park in California. They came upon a crash just outside Salt Lake City and got out to help. That's when the semi barreled into the crash scene. Tyrone Williams had a split second to jump out of the way."Honestly, there were car parts everywhere," Tyrone Williams said. "And then somebody yelled, 'Oh, crap.' And I look up, and there's a semi barreling down on us. And I jumped over the guardrail, and so did the other guys. And my father-in-law and wife got struck by the pickup truck that the semi hit."Cornelsen, 88, suffered broken legs, ribs, pelvis, tailbone, and a head wound. Heather Williams was also critically injured. "When I climbed back over the barrier, I saw my father-in-law laying on the ground, and he was saying, help me, help me, please. I'm hurt. I'm hurt. And I looked over, and I saw my wife, and I knew I couldn't help her," Tyrone Williams said. "That whole side of her face was removed. Her mandible was broken in four places. Her cheekbone was broken. She lost her right eye. I mean, her nose, her upper palate is all broken. It’s very extensive. And she'll need she'll need surgeries in the future for years."The family is recovering at the University of Utah Medical Center and will be there for weeks to come. But as bad as the crash was, Tyrone Williams said his injured families agree on one thing."We would all do it again. We've all said that to each other since this happened, that we'ddo it again," he said.Tyrone Williams is self-employed. Friends in De Soto have set up a GoFundMe page to help with medical expenses. He says his father-in-law is set to return to California in a couple of weeks. He says he will stay with his wife in the hospital, and she may not get to go home until early next year.
