Petipeti, Piupiu, Blechnum discolor, Crown fern

Blechnum discolor is a fern found throughout New Zealand, usually in drier forests from sea level to 900m. It is a handsome upright fern, with sterile fronds up to 1.2m long and 15cm wide that form a shuttlecock shaped crown. The closely spaced pointed oblong leaflets are bright green above and paler below with slightly wavy edges. Its febrile fronds are widely spaced and have very narrow leaflets. Older plants often have short trunks. The fern spreads by stolons, forming large colonies. It makes an attractive groundcover in the dappled shade of the trees, preferring a light, damp but well drained soil.
