Houston Texans running back running Dare Ogunbowale has spent much of his NFL career playing on special teams.

But he probably never thought he'd ever have to step in at kicker.

When Ka'imi Fairbairn couldn't finish the game due to a quad injury, Ogunbowale, a Milwaukee native, became the first NFL player not listed as a kicker or a punter to make a field goal since receiver Wes Welker in 2004.

Tied 30-30 with 8:45 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Texans had a fourth-and-goal on Tampa Bay's 11-yard line. Most coaches likely would have gone for the touchdown rather than call on the emergency kicker, but Texans coach DeMeco Ryans let Ogunbowale try a 29-yard field goal to take the lead and the seven-year NFL veteran nailed it. Houston won the game, 39-37.

He also handled kickoffs in the second half.

Ogunbowale, who walked on at the University of Wisconsin as a defensive back before switching to running back in 2014, also played soccer, basketball and track at Marquette High School before playing football his junior season. He rushed for 1,518 yards and 13 touchdowns at Wisconsin and caught 60 passes for 507 yards and two touchdowns.

He said he last kicked a field goal in a game in high school, but it appears he had some confidence in his leg strength if called upon.

"I was always kind of the unwritten emergency kicker but nothing ever came up that I needed to be out there kicking," Ogunbowale said after the game.

"I'm just glad I was one of the guys that was able to step up."

Any NFL position player who kicks a field goal should probably have his cleats hanging in the Hall of Fame, especially when it's the first time its happened in 19 seasons.

"It's pretty cool, I might have to give these shoes to Canton."

Dare is also the brother of Arike Ogunbowale, a three-time WNBA all-star, who now actually has her line of own footwear.
