I wanted to see if anyone else has had a negative experience with AEV products or customer service? I recently purchased the Dualsport XP lift with heavy duty springs, and shortly after installation I noticed paint flaking off of both of the rear shock reservoirs.

I reached out to AEV and received a quick response asking for more photos. After sending additional photos, I received no response back. I checked back a few times but nobody from AEV responded to my emails.

Today, I submitted a case through their website with an explanation and photos of the issue, and received an immediate response stating that the flaking paint is due to rocks hitting the shock reservoirs and would not be covered under warranty.

I found this extremely frustrating, as I had barely driven the Jeep at all when I noticed the flaking paint and had not done any off-roading or dirt road driving. In fact, I did a re-gear shortly after getting the lift installed, and did the 500 mile break in period which involves very slow driving on side roads. Not to mention, the worst area of paint flaking is on the back side of the reservoir which would be almost impossible to hit directly with a rock, either from the road or off of the tire. There is also no issue at all with the paint on the main rear shocks (just the reservoir), and I feel like if this was really due to rocks hitting the shocks, there would be damage on both the reservoirs and the actual shocks.

Pretty disappointed so far with AEV customer service, especially since this is supposed to be a "premium" product. My old shocks had no damage from rocks or otherwise after tens of thousands of miles, and they were much cheaper than these Bilstein/AEV shocks.

I know its just aesthetics (the shocks handle great), but it still sucks to spend the money for higher end products and then have an issue with cheap paint...and then have zero customer support on top of it.

I bought premium coilovers for my Xterra about a year or two before getting the JT. I didn’t have paint peeling issues, but this did happen:

What I’m getting at… cosmetics are usually not covered by any manufacturer and I’m sure your shocks won’t come apart and almost kill your like these POS’ a crap company going under the name of PRG sold me.

Yikes! That's pretty terrible.

And yes, as I mentioned, I know this is just an aesthetic issue. My problem is, AEV specifically states that their products (including shocks) have a one year warranty on paint, powder, and dip finishes. The fact that they're trying to dismiss this as a "rock chip" seems like pretty lame customer service.

I have had my dual sport on for almost a year I think. I will try and look tomorrow if it's not sub 0 but I dont think I have any paint missing or chipping like that. My experiences with AEV thus far have been pretty stellar. Great knowledgable people on the phone and always willing to discuss non-typical situations. Thats a shame you seem to be experiencing the opposite of that. But like already said - cosmetics for a shock or spring will probably never be covered. I have some big rust issues on my Fox 2.5's on my TJ - after a year the top of one of the shock started rusting like crazy - it must have gotten missed during the assembly process to be coated properly. Fox told me I could just buy a new one at over $1,500 a pop if it bothered me despite it actually causing a functional problem with the shock.

Did you buy directly from AEV? If you bought from a vendor see if they can warranty it out maybe.

I did purchase through a vendor - could be worth trying to see what they can do. I have a feeling they will probably say to take it up with AEV, but I guess you never know 🤷‍♂️

maybe. It doesn't hurt to try. Hopefully somebody listens. I'll try to get some pics if I do have anything similar tomorrow. Good luck!

Sometimes things fall through the cracks with customer service and trying to find the one person to do some critical thinking that can help. To them, they may just be lumping you with the plethora of people wanting pretty new warranty exchange but actually thrashed their shocks.

I have the dame thing happening with my AEV XP rear shocks as well, mine has about a 2 inch square that has peeled away from the reservoir. I noticed it just before Christmas, not really happy, but they do work amazing.

Yeah...I love the performance, but there's obviously a paint issue they're not addressing. Have you reached out to them at all? They blew me off big time and basically said "too bad". Like you said, at least the shocks work, haha.

I have not reached out to them because I knew that their reaction would be as you described. I have raised issues with vendors in the past and in my experience they mostly blow you off for anything not mechanically related, now if the shock itself was bad or under performing I would be all over them.
I will repair the bad paint when the weather improves as best I can and deal with it.

If you are in a area that rusts I would address bare metal pretty quickly. Since you haven't received the results you were expecting from AEV, I would get a paint touch up pin that matches and then spray it with a can of clear. And clear all of them to prevent further issues.

Thats a good idea, if they will give out the paint code.
Ive had plenty of powder coated parts in high wear areas, especially from rocks, chips are the result, when a patch of powder coat peels back that tells me that the surface was not prepped properly or something in the process was not done correctly.
