Surat

Surat is a city located in the Indian state of Gujarat and is popularly also known as the 'Silk City', 'Diamond City' or 'Textile Hub'. It was listed as the second cleanest city in India in August 2020.

It is located near the Tapti River at the Gulf of Khambhat and is the commercial and economic center in south Gujarat. Surat is a hub of diamond and textile industries. The city experiences a tropical climate moderated strongly by the Sea.

Surat is one of the most vibrant cities and has a varied heritage. It is also known for Gujarati food and delicacies. Some of the unique dishes include Dhokla, Khaman, Locho, Ghari and so forth.

It is the city where the Britishers first landed in India. The Dutch and the Portuguese also established their business centers in Surat. The city also has various engineering plants like Essar, Larsen and Toubro and RIL.

There are many historical monuments and places to visit in and around Surat. The major attractions include Dandi, Dumas, Hajira, Tithal and Ubhrat.

Surat court dismisses Rahul Gandhi's plea for stay on defamation conviction

A sessions court in Surat on Thursday dismissed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s plea for a stay on his conviction in a criminal defamation case over his “Modi surname” remark. Last Thursday, the court of Additional Sessions Judge RP Mogera had reserved its verdict for April 20 on Gandhi’s application for a stay, pending his appeal against a lower court’s order sentencing him to two years in jail in the case. Gandhi had submitted that the trial court treated him harshly after being overwhelmingly influenced by his status as an MP.
