Victoria Beckham on breaking into fashion: 'For a long time I was a laughing stock, but I knew I would make it'

The mother-of-four has broken away from her 'Posh Spice' image in recent years and forged a career for herself in the fashion world.

She told The Business Of Fashion (BoF) magazine: "For a long time there, I was a bit of a laughing stock.

"And while everybody was busy laughing, what was I doing? I was laying the foundation to what I have in place now.'

However she admitted she wouldn't be where she is without the Spice Girls - however it is also a double edged sword.

She said: 'It’s a double-edged sword really. The most valuable part of being famous is that you have a voice and people will listen.

"I mean I can get a lot of attention. I don’t have to rely on advertising campaigns. But I don’t like to use that card very often.

"I like to keep my head down, work hard, focus on what I’m doing business-wise. I like to try and control how much I’m seen. I don’t want to go out and be photographed every day, you know.

"So, I think that as much as one might say, "it has helped," I’m not so sure. I’ve had to overcome lots of preconceptions, and that’s okay."

The fashionista celebrated her 40th birthday recently by soaking up the sun with her nearest and dearest at a five star luxury hotel in southern Utah, believed to be joined by celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay and his family.

On her return to LA, she will be attended a party in her honour thrown by BFFs Eva Longoria and celebrity hairdresser Ken Paves, with a super exclusive guestlist.

Throughout the day, Victoria shared a number of throwback snaps from her childhood, including images of her mother and father and adorable pictures of her with her siblings Christian and Louise on Twitter.
