Acid Fast Staining

Acid-fast bacteria contain a lipid-rich cell wall with mycolic acid that is relatively impermeable to most basic dyes unless they are combined with phenol. Once stained, the cells resist decolorization with acidified organic solvents and are therefore called "acid-fast"
