So after reveiwing and rating the first book in the series favorably, it pains me a little to one star this one.

The concept of the series is excellent enough, and I thought that the suspense/action plot was seamless within the entire plot (some romances add a suspence story line that just doesnt flow)

Why did I dislike the book? Because Nicola Cornick gave us the heroine from hell! I read parts of the book with my mouth open in shock. The part where the heroine rides her horse NAKED into the GENTLEMAN'S CLUB that her husband was at to get his attention was too much.

Now what struck me as being hollow, was the fact that the heroine kept bemoaning how much she loved the hero, and he does not love her back. But instead of trying to win his love, or get to know him or SOMETHING, she acts like a crazy person!

I don't even think I have read a contemporary romance or even erotic romance where someone parades naked, on an animal to get their spouse's attention! I am sorry- that just reeks of mental instability.

Oh, and there was the part where she ran off with someone else because she (a married lady) was leaving the hero. Because she loved him, and he did not love her. So you know, the adult thing is to leave town WITH ANOTHER MAN.

Throughout the book, the heroine was flighty, mean spirited and immature. I would recommend this book only to find out what happens in the story, not for the romance. Comment | Permalink

Romance novel plots are frequently far-fetched, but this has to be one of the most ridiculous. The story includes a murder, an orgy and the heroine riding around buck naked a la Lady Godiva. Why would she do such a thing? Because she’s willful and impetuous! And mad at the hero, because for 90% of the novel, he acts like a cold fish who is mostly after her money. Still, the book was mildly diverting so I guess a two star read.

DOWN & DIRTY QUICKIE REVIEW!

One Sentence Summary:

He’s a blank slate looking for a paycheck and she’s buck-fuckin’ crazy.

Name That Trope:

1) Um...there were words. That’s the trope; words.

What part made you fangirl squeal OR hater rage:

* The romance 'plot.' Ms. Heroine whoops-falls on Mr. Hero’s dick, so they marry, but turns out he’s being blackmailed by Evil Brother Number 1 causing our “hero” to use our gal’s money- fast forward over a whole lotta nothin’ happening and whammo: the 2 has the love feels.

* Why the hell is this book divided into 3 parts? Why? I’ll tell you why; for no goddamn reason, that’s why.

* This mofo KIDNAPS Mr. Hero cause ain’t nobody marrying her BFF; cue the whiplash when heroine randomly decides she loves him 2.5 seconds later??

* The 2 bang in chapter 1 then WHOOSH - gal runs away for the subsequent 87 chapters. (Ok so it’s like 3 chapters, but still.)

* The hero lacks heroism. He’s just...there. Existing. Personality? Interests? Hobbies? Passions? He ain’t got ‘em.

* The idgit heroine constantly pulls some dumbass shit. Shit like:
1) “I am NOT in love with the hero I’m just denying him autonomy by fucking up his wedding ceremony, oh wait I’m horny YEP TOTES LOVE YOU NOW!” - a made up quote from Heroine Dumbass

2) She rides buckass naked ON A HORSE into the hero’s club cause chickadee wants his attention. Did I mention she jumps out a second story window on said horse? CAUSE SHE JUMPS TITTIES-OUT FROM A SECOND STORY WINDOW ON A HORSE! With no injury. Because logic.

3) She runs away from hero-hubby with Random Background Horny Dude to bang because…? Reasons? She had a marriage sad and she skips town with this guy outta fucking nowhere. No plot build up. No foreshadowing. No nothin’.

* The book gives us a decent Who-Dun-It murder mystery, but it then resolves in the stupidest way imaginable with the stupidest explanation. I squinted so hard at the reveal I damn near gave myself permanent stank face.

* The author calls this book a romance. The publisher calls this book a romance. Goodreads calls this book a romance. Spoiler alert: there ain’t no frickin’ romance in this romance book.
Like, for really real y’all- The leads spend most of the story avoiding one another, causing the dawning realization of love to pop outta NOWHERE from NOTHING! The 2 have all of 1 on-page honest-sharing-of-the-souls conversation in the whole damn book.

* The pacing. OH FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY...the pacing. Ain’t nothing this book loved doing more than skipping and jumping over entire plot points. The scene would be trucking along, then all of a sudden we would yada-yada montage over 3 different scenes in the span of a single page. Like, excusez moi? Fuck that noise. If I wanted to fast forward through a couple’s romance then I’d watch a Hollywood rom-com.

Favorite Character:

There’d have to BE a characterized character on page for me to have a favorite character.

How smexy was the smex?

Blink and you’ll miss it.

Whose Line Is It Anyway:
The hero, page 340:
“But surely if Lizzie had overheard she would have burst in, challenged them and demanded to know what they were talking about? That was Lizzie’s way- to confront an issue not to run from it.”

REWIND THE BOOK 248 PAGES AGO:
Her- “The important thing was that she had outrun Nat again. She did not look back.”
Him- “Damn the woman! He had chased her through every back street and alley of Fortune’s Folly.”

...Y’all seein what I’m seeing? Cause I’m seeing some bullshit.

Got any bitching to do?

Yeah. The fact that the author does a damn good job at writing some deep POV, enough of which that I actually finished the novel. Yet, somehow, someway, we can’t get any consistency or characterization or plot logic ANYWHERE up in this bitch.

Visually Depict Yo Book Feels:

Famous last words:

I wanted to like this book. It just didn’t do anything. It didn’t say anything. And hell, when it did, it said shitty shit- like the heroine wanting a redemption story for her brother WHO WAS GONNA LET HER GET RAPED BY HIS PALS JUST FOR FUNSIES. Even if the book were perfect and I loved every word in it- that right there is toxic. It’s bad messaging from the author and it’s a gross attitude from any character, heroine or otherwise. It shows this female has zero self love. To quote RuPaul, honey if you can’t love yourself how in the hell you gonna love somebody else, can I get an amen up in here?!

Both the Heroine Lizzie and the Heroine Nat, Duke of Waterhouse were unlikeable. Lizzie was so silly I did not care what happened to her, and Nat was aloof and distant except when he wasn't in bed with his wife. The story of Lydia and Tom was left unfinished, as she had the baby at the end and there was no communicaton.....Was glad to see that Dexter and Laura had their son. Also wished the story of Flora Minchin and Alice Lister's brother was better developed. It was an effort to finish this book, not a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy.

This book couldn't hold my attention. It started out with a too stupid to live moment from the female lead and went downhill from there. At one point, she rides Lady Godiva style through her husbands club, up the stairs (horses don't do that easily) then jumps from the second floor balcony without injuring the horse. What was even more fantastical and unbelievable - everyone in the community never said boo to her about it. The author even says the people present admired her for her spirit or something equally silly.

The author also tries to force the reader to believe her brother who impregnated the daughter of a duke without marrying her and intended to allow his friends to rape the main character while he conducted an orgy at her house is worthy of the main character's love and sisterly devotion.

I also had a problem with the hero of the story blatantly telling the main character he's marrying her for her money and then her getting upset and running off into the night later in the book when her brother says the exact same thing. This is all after the book starting off with the main character locking herself and the hero in a tower and having sex with him on purpose to keep him from marrying someone else. She got what she wanted and she still acted like the injured party.

The more I write about what bothered me, the more I think I should rate this book lower.

Book 3 in The Brides of Fortune series

Once again, a winner for Nicola. She is a must buy author of mine for a very good reason.

To save her friend from a loveless marriage, Lady Elizabeth kidnaps Nathaniel. He is not happy to say the least. Things quickly heat up and go beyond what either was expecting. A perfect conclusion to this highly desirable series which is on my keeper shelf to never be given away. I will want to re-read this often.

As I didn't own books one and two of this series/trilogy? I picked this book up on a whim. I haven't read anything else by this author and I'm probably not likely too. Lizzie was a thoroughly unbelievable and unlikable character and Nat was just annoying af. I did speed through it and was pretty unimpressed with the overall story. 1.5 ⭐.

When we meet up with Lady Elizabeth in her book, she’s getting ready to commit a very serious crime. But it’s in the name of love and friendship, so she doesn’t hesitate. Her friend Nat Waterhouse is making a mistake marrying one of the local heiresses and Lizzie is not about to stand by and do nothing about it. The only thing to do is kidnap the man, hold him hostage until the time of the wedding has come and gone, and then let him go. Nice and simple. Problem solved. Or so she thought.

Nat, of course, is none too happy once she pulls off her caper, and when she refuses to release him, it’s his cajoling about her impulsiveness and wont for trouble that eventually causes trouble for them both. He pushes her a little too far and Lizzie steps up to the plate to prove to Nat how far she will go to follow through when it comes to her schemes. This time it’s Nat who loses control when passion ignites between them and Lizzie is ruined when they make love.

Calling off his wedding is Nat’s only choice so he can marry Lizzie. It’s actually the best plan, she gets the protection of his name and he gets her dowry that will help keep his secrets where they belong. But Lizzie knows Nat doesn’t love her and she refuses to live a lifetime without love. She holds out as long as she can, but Nat wears her down and they eventually marry. And that’s when the formerly high-spirited, do-anything miss becomes the outrageous, broken-hearted Mrs. Waterhouse who pulls stunts the like of which the folks of Fortune’s Folly have never seen.

Danger and mystery are also afoot throughout this book, and, as usual, Ms. Cornick gives us the slip and throws a culprit at us that we never expected. I do have to say that Lizzie is my favorite character of the series. Though her stunts are a little much for her times, you feel the hurt and desperateness that cause her to forge head without thought. And kudos to Nat for hanging in there with her, just like a husband should.

I jumped into this book without reading any of the previous books in the series and really shouldn't have. The main couple's relationship was frustratingly rushed, and the progression of each from strong attraction to realizing they were in love didn't have much emotional impact for me. The secondary characters kind of blended together (so many couples!) and the resolution of the main mystery (which came out of nowhere! I thought this was a standard can't-deny-our-urges book when all of a sudden someone was murdered, and then not really investigated) didn't make sense. I gather from context that most of the story was the culmination of events from a prior book. Still, I read the whole thing and enjoyed quite a bit of it. The town's charming. I probably won't try the rest of the series.

Review - Probably my least favourite of the trilogy. I much preferred Scandals of an Innocent. However, I really liked Elizabeth as a character, and how she grew up through her marriage, and her dissection of her mother's actions. I do wish more had been seen of Nat's family. There was one mention of a very ill father, but nothing further.

Genre - Historical / Romance

Characters - Elizabeth Scarlet / Nathaniel Waterhouse / Laura Anstruther / Miles Vickery / Dexter Anstruther/ Tom Fortune

Setting - Fortune's Folly (England)

Series - Brides of Fortune #3

Recommend? - Yes.

Rating - 14/20

If you want to read my review of this book, check out Bronwyn's one-star review- it's exactly what I would have written, to the extent that it would be repetitious to write it again. The only reason I gave this book a second star was that I did enjoy the high-school style revenge episodes that popped up now and then... Catfight!!! All joking aside, skip this one, it was BAD. Sorry, Ms. Cornick, maybe another time.

I may be doing Cornick a disservice. The first romance I read by her, I was on a romance jag - it may have been too much of a good thing. I didn't find it compelling. This time I picked up the last book in a trilogy.

Whatever the reasons, Cornick has not made the top of romance list. I won't rush to find another book by her.

Deli Lizzie ve Natt'in hikayesi.

When I attempted to explain this book to friends of mine I warned them that this book comes out swinging from the first few pages. It’s HAWT. This is one of those romance books where the couple ends up marrying within the first few chapters, and the rest of the book is the story of them actually getting to know each other and eventually fall in love. The kicker with The Undoing of a Lady is that Lizzie and Nat have known each other for most of their lives. Except when Lizzie forces Nat to cross an unspoken line, they realize they’re in way over their depth of what they *think* they know about each other.

Lizzie is hellfire incarnate. She’s smart, feisty, and honestly doesn’t give a crap about what people say or think about her. Her two elder brothers are both hot messes, so she’s used to flirting with scandal. Nathaniel took it upon himself to look out for her since her own brothers wouldn’t, and thus began their friendship. When Nat entered into an engagement with a local woman solely for her money, Lizzie took it upon herself to show him how foolish it was, that he shouldn’t marry for money but for love.

Now mind you, when she locks herself and Nat in a building against his will she doesn’t have it in her head to convince him that he should marry her. No. In fact, Lizzie just wants him to realize that he’s going to eventually regret his decision and then spend the rest of his life agonizing over it. Nat, of course, is furious, especially when he realizes that Lizzie isn’t going to let him out. That’s when things get interesting. And that’s just the first few chapters.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s one of my favorite’s by Nicola Cornick, and the third in her Brides of Fortune Series. The dynamic between Lizzie and Nat sizzles between the pages and you truly root for both of them to get over themselves and see each other for who they truly are.

What I loved about this book: Fantastic SHEXY scenes

What I didn’t like: hmm…

Another fun story in this trilogy featuring the spirited Lady Elizabeth "Lizzie" Scarlet and her long time friend, Nathaniel, the Earl Waterson. Lizzie convinces him to meet her in the folly on her family's property the night before his wedding to one of Fortune Folly's heiresses and locks him in with her to keep him from the alter and from what she thinks is the biggest mistake of his life. Nat is furious with her and calls her immature and selfish, claiming she did this only because she is jealous and wants him for herself. She denies this, saying she's doing it for his own good. Mocking her, he says she couldn't seduce him if she tried, so of course she does, and shockingly, she does so rather successfully. Nat ravishes Lizzie and he is appalled with himself over it and in essence breaks her heart because she has truly been in love with him for a long time already and he clearly does not reciprocate any emotion beyond friendship with her. Or so he thinks. He and his fiance break off their wedding and Nat is determined to marry Lizzie in order to set things straight. She tries to avoid him and turn down his pursuit, but it is only a matter of time before these two are together again. But they both have a lot to overcome if they're ever to have a happily ever after.
