All the emotions I’ve come to expect from this talented Aussie author are here. Themes of the underdog, resilience, family, friendship, tolerance, greed, gluttony, strength of human spirit, acceptance and simply being kind are part of what makes this another solid strong book, in times that are not always smooth sailing in the world today.

Provoked MANY thoughts in this reader today. In fact, I hit stop (I physically read and listened to the audio format at various times) and thought about it for SO long.

I was pretty much hounding my girlfriend Jo, who was reading at the same time, for her thoughts on the ending. It was good to be able to discuss.

I adore the overarching themes (there is no other way to say this) that encapsulates what it means to be good, kind, and spirited.. and of course, what it means to be the opposite. We also hear about the nature of community and hard work, sustainability, drought, and being oneself – kids and adults alike!

Annie is quirky, she isn’t like all the other kids at school and heartbreakingly friendless, she adopts the cheeky little dog the town has called Runt, others think he’s more than cheeky, the constable wants to detain him (sirens and all) but this dog only has eyes for Annie, and Annie adores her companion.

The lovely town name of Upson Downs – this book is perfect in the audio format as this just sounds so real – is the home of Annie and her family who are sheep farmers. What captured my heart with this one (what didn’t?!) were the audio sequences where Annie leads Runt through obstacles courses, that are paramount to the story.

The ‘GO GO GO GO! BACK! STAY!’ commands must be heard to be believed. They feel live to the listening ear. I felt I was in the stands waving my Akubra!

Narrator Genevieve Hegney commands a performance I honestly have never seen before (I listen to more than one audio a week). It was delightful, exciting, and believable. My son is ten and I would love to see this book read to the class.

Craig Silvey as always packs many themes into his story (there really are so many), and this one is presented like an exciting stage play, spoken in a simple manner befitting the time, place and audience level. This is not to say it is a novel for younger readers, this is for everyone.

Runt is a must-read novel where we face up to more than one villain, yes, that is you Fergus Fink! And the dastardly gluttonous Earl Robert-Barron (don’t you just love the name). Annie has the weight of the world on her shoulders, but it is through her that we see how to learn to be our best self, no matter how that may look.

With beautiful and original illustrations by Sara Acton that add to the understated grandness of this book, this package is combined for great things to come, and I convey my thanks to Allen & Unwin for my physical uncorrected proof copy.

Meeting the author at an event tonight added another layer of complexity for me. Learning about the writing process and the transformation of an idea come to fruition. Not just a job, or a pen to paper affair. So much in the pipeline for these characters, and many more from this author we have allowed into our hearts. I’m spent!

Eleven-year-old Annie Shearer lives in the town of Upson Downs on a sheep farm with her parents, Bryan and Susie, her brother Max and her grandma Dolly.

No one knows where Runt the stray dog came from or how he came to be in Upson Downs. He would roam the streets scavenging from bins behind shops like the butcher or baker. People were constantly shooing him away then one day he met Annie whilst she was eating her lunch at school over by the oval. And this was the start of what would become a special bond between Annie and Runt.

Runt by Aussie author Craig Silvey is a beautiful and heartwarming story with laugh-out-loud moments. This is a middle-grade book, but it’s a book that can and has been enjoyed by any age. I must also make mention the illustrations throughout this book they are absolutely beautiful along with the cover. This book deserves five stars and more in my opinion. I LOVED IT. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Eleven year old Annie Shearer lived in the small rural town of Upson Downs with her mum, dad, grandma and brother Max. When the stray dog, which everyone called Runt, once more evaded capture by the local cop, then turned up at Annie's school in her lunch break, it wasn't long before the two were fast friends. Runt adored Annie while she'd discovered a best friend, for Annie was a loner. Runt soon became part of the family, though he too was a loner and wouldn't do anything for anyone else in the family.

When Runt's remarkable speed and agility saw Annie train Runt over an obstacle course, she decided the prize money at the Krumpets Dog Show in London would help save their farm. But Annie had discovered Runt would not move if others were watching - what could she do? How could she get her beloved friend to obey her commands?

Runt is a wonderful, heart warming tale of a dog and his owner by an author who can't do wrong in my eyes! Craig Silvey has nailed this one, and I adored the book and love the clever naming of the town. Annie and Runt were an excellent team, and her supportive family and friends were special. Although a middle grade book, it will be enjoyed by young and old alike. Highly recommended.

With thanks to Allen & Unwin for my uncorrected proof ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

After years evading capture, Runt is remarkably fast and agile, perfect for herding runaway sheep. Runt is a heart-warming and hilarious tale of kindness, friendship, hurdles, hoops, tunnels, see-saws, being yourself and bringing out the best in others.

My Thoughts /

First and foremost, a huge thank you to Allen & Unwin for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.

I just wanted to tell you that I don’t think Runt is afraid. In fact, he looks like a very brave dog indeed. For a long time he didn’t have anyone. And then you found each other, and you showed him kindness when nobody else ever did. That’s why he follows you everywhere. He chose you. And you chose him. That’s why you’re such a brilliant team… You are his whole world. And he runs and leaps and plays with you because he’s happy. That’s how he shows you his joy and his gratitude.

My heart is full. I feel so incredibly fortunate to have been sent a copy of Craig Silvey’s latest publication, Runt which has been aimed at a younger reading audience – ages 8-12. I grew up reading The Hardy Boys series and Nancy Drew books. This year’s generation of 8-12s will grow up reading wonderful titles like Runt, and that makes me very happy. You won’t have any trouble picking out adjectives to use to describe this book. Heart-warming, affecting, heartening, rewarding, inspiring, elevating, uplifting, tender, moving, poignant, loving and the list just keeps going.

This is the story of Annie Shearer, and her best friend, Runt. Annie Shearer is eleven years old and lives in the town of Upson Downs. Annie lives on a sheep farm with her brother Max, her parents Bryan and Susie, and Annie’s grandma Dolly. Annie’s family worry that she might be lonely because she spends so much time by herself, but Annie has a very special friend. He is a dog. And his name is Runt.

People in the street would often join the chase, trying to snatch him and dive on him and trap him, but Runt slipped past them all, vanishing into the shadows like a panther in the jungle, leaving behind a parade of panting pedestrians and one thwarted constable.

With underlying themes of championing the underdog, the realities of farming life and resilience, family and friendship, gluttony and greed. It’s a story about good people. It’s a story about bad people. And it’s a story about difficulty and duress, and the courage and determination that glimmers in all of us.

Each chapter is relatively short and revolves around one main subject with it. With the chapter headings usually giving a hint as to what lies within. For example: Upson Downs; The Collector (is about Earl Robert-Barren – he likes to collect things); To The Max; Runt; The Deep Thinker (this is about Annie’s grandpa Wally Shearer, who has passed. Wally spent a lot of time thinking and tinkering).

And, Pedigree:

Fergus Fink, for example, is proud of his pedigree.

From Ferrick Fink in the 1920s, to Fignacious Fink in the 1930s, to Fergaline Fink in the 1940s, to Flangela Fink in the 1940s, to Finnigan Fink in the 1950s, to Farrington Fink in the 1960s, to Funklin Fink in the 1070s, to Furbert Fink in the 1980s, to Frida Fink in the 1990s.

Then it was Fergus Fink’s turn to take the leash.

The writing is simple but effective and is sure to be a hit with both children and adults alike. Runt is full of whimsical, eccentric and larger than life characters with some added oddities and idiosyncrasies of rural Australia. Silvey has written his characters with a very Australian outback spirit. As tough as they come but with hearts as big as a bull elephant. Hope is the definite overarching feeling that brings this story to life. I don’t want to go into too much depth with the story but let me say that Runt will sit proudly, holding its own, amongst my Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew collections.

“You don’t have to carry the weight of the world on your toolbelt …if you’re too busy looking for things to fix, all you ever see are problems, and you miss out on the stuff that already works.”

Runt is a novel for young readers by award-winning best-selling Australian screenwriter and author, Craig Silvey. The text is enhanced with delightful illustrations by Sara Acton. Eleven-year-old Annie Shearer is well aware of the terrible effects of the drought on the farms of Upson Downs, but it’s when she overhears her parents’ concerns about the overdraft on the overdraft that it really hits home. Annie has always been a fixer: see her leather toolbelt? (Grandpa Wally’s) But there’s nothing in the toolbelt that will fix this.

A few days later, though, at the Woolarama Show, while her mum Susie is trying to sell (horrible) humble pies, grandma Dolly is hoping for love at the Kissing Booth, dad Bryan is checking out the floral display and older brother Max is planning his death-defying feat, Annie stumbles on a possible solution. She watches dogs running the Canine Agility Course, and she knows her best friend, Runt could easily blitz the competition. But only if no-one is watching.

Runt is quick and clever, but stubbornly refuses to perform with an audience. One effective distraction (Max plummets to earth like a meteor wearing a long scarf) and a quick run later, and Annie and Runt have won $500 and a chance at the National Title. With a bit of training, Runt could surely win that too, and then they could compete in the Krumpets Dog Show in London. The quarter-of-a-million-dollar prize would fix her family’s problems. But what to do about Runt’s crowd shyness? And how would they ever fund a trip to London?

Things become more urgent when greedy landowner Earl Robert-Barron issues an ultimatum. And something else they haven’t factored in, because they’re mostly unaware, is the determination of one Fergus Fink to win this coveted prize. He has pedigree: every Fink since the 1920s has won this. Pedigree, though: “It doesn’t matter how pressive your parents are, you can still be a dud. The opposite is also true: the most woefully odious and awful people can produce delightful, talented and kind-hearted children.”

This talented author gives the reader a wonderful cast of characters in a family and a town that brims with clever ideas and lateral thinking and support and care. There are moments of high drama, many of the laugh-out-loud variety and a few that will have the reader choking up with emotion. This is a story with a whole lot of love and maybe even a bit of magic.

Silvey has lots of fun with the English language, his tongue-in-cheek character names and organisation titles, playing word games, and throwing in the odd dad joke, all of which make this an entertaining read, not just for the target reader age, but for those well beyond their first decade. This is a book that will have you constantly chuckling and reaching the final page with a big smile on your face. Thank you, Mr Silvey!

Runt by Craig Silvey was a sheer delight to read, it felt like 'coming home.' Forget his earlier books Honeybee and Jasper Jones , Runt is completely different and aimed at his youngest reading audience yet. Annie Shearer is eleven years old and lives in a small country town called Upson Downs. Her parents run a sheep farm and Annie never goes anywhere without her leather tool belt, causing some kids to think she's a little odd.

"Fixing things is Annie's hidden talent. If something is wrong, she wants to make it right. But some problems are so tricky that it's not clear how to solve them, or they're so large that the solution doesn't fit in her tool belt. Like the drought, for example." Page 5

I warmed to Annie instantly and cheered when she made a friend in the stray dog of undetermined pedigree, Runt. Scavenging from bins and being chased by the local constabulary, Runt was all alone in the world, until he met Annie and they became fast friends.

The unique relationship between Annie and Runt is special and together they're capable of achieving great feats. Annie enters them both into an agility course at the local show in an attempt to win the grand prize of $500 to help her parents pay the mortgage on the mortgage. Naturally we want them to win, but Runt has a fear of being watched and won't do any tricks if someone else is watching. How are they going to be able to run the agility course at the show with so many people looking on?

Every chapter book needs a villain and Silvey gives us two: the Collector who lives on the hill and buys up properties whose owners have fallen victim to the hardships of drought, and a fellow competitor in the world of canine agility courses, Fergus Fink.

The story is further enhanced by charming illustrations by Sara Acton. Born in England but now living in Australia, Sara was kind enough to reach out on Instagram after enjoying my Bookmark Monday post so naturally I think we should permanently adopt her.

Brimming with little life lessons and subtle morals along the way, Runt is full of heart. If you loved Matilda by Roald Dahl, this is the book for you. There's even a 14 page teacher's resource available for download.

Runt by Australian author Craig Silvey is an uplifting, heartwarming and comforting read for all ages and I'm looking forward to passing this on to family.

Runt is a heartwarming story filled with humour and love. Craig Silvey gives his readers messages of being yourself, living with kindness, staying optimistic, accepting people (and dogs) how they are and not having to fix everything around you.

Runt is an outstanding story, perfect for fans of Babe and Matilda. With its simple prose and uncomplicated plot it is suitable for the younger middle grade reader aged 6 - 10.

I know I’m not the target audience for this book, in fact, I’m about 40 years too late. But that didn’t stop me loving Runt so much, it’s gone right to the top of the list of my favourite books of the year. Ignore the age advice on the back cover of this book and please read it, no matter how old (or young) you are.

It follows the story of young Annie Shearer who lives at Upson Downs; an 11-year-old that doesn’t have a friend in the world and carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. Until she meets Runt, an unwanted, homeless mutt of indistinguishable pedigree. The two become firm friends and set out to save the family farm by competing in a dog agility course.

This book has all the classic elements of great storytelling: despicable villains, a galloping plot, a fabulous dramatic arc, a great cast of unique supporting characters, good humour and tonnes of heart.

It also has some wonderful lessons, ones about acceptance and not trying to change people (or dogs), following your dreams and knowing the difference between bad lies and “kind lies”.

Ultimately, with this book, Silvey proves that a cracking story has no target audience, it’s for everyone.

Thank you Allen & Unwin for sending us a copy to read and review.
Get ready readers for a striking and absolutely stunning book that will capture your heart and give you all the feels.
Runt is a heartwarming, laugh out loud, kind, quirky and smart story full of beautiful illustrations by the talented Sara Acton.
Welcome to the country town of Upsey Downs.
Annie Shearer is a charismatic eleven year old who lives with her family and her best friend, a stray dog Runt who is fast and clever.
The two set out on daily adventures where fun is a number one priority.
But when a mean landowner decides to threaten to take control of the family farm, Annie and Runt come up with an idea.
Enter Runt in a dog competition that will take them to London and possibly win a large amount of money.
Introducing a nasty villain Fergus Fink who will stop at nothing to mess with everything so he can win.
Can Annie and Runt be a success, win and be the fastest dog in the world to save the family farm?
With a memorable selection of addictive plot themes, a cast of misfits, colourful characters and loveable ones, masses of heart and soul and one cute personality plus puppy, this meaningful story will give you all the warm and fuzzies.
I was completely absorbed, admired and cherished all the words that led to different emotions, cheering on the cast and getting totally sucked into this sensational book.
A wonderful tale for the young at heart but that being said, Runt is a story for all ages.
An instant classic.

Craig Silvey is a favourite author of mine so I was pretty excited to receive an uncorrected proof from the publisher then a signed copy at an author event.
This book is delightful! It tells the story of Annie, her family and her closest friend - a ragtag, stray dog by the name of Runt.
Annie’s country town is at the mercy of a land baron who has acquired his wealth by nefarious means. When Annie’s family’s farm is at risk, Annie sees an opportunity to save it utilising some of Runt’s remarkable skills.
One thing I loved about this book was the hilarious names of some of the characters. They were so perfect for painting images of heroes and villains. I also loved the way the story unfolded and the way the town pulled together to help Annie out. There were no predictable outcomes so it was easy to remain engaged.
Although it is a quick read, it is really rather heartwarming and beautifully conceived and written. It is suitable for all ages and would make a great family read.
I have already purchased another copy as a gift for Christmas.

With thanks to Allen and Unwin for a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Truly a wonderful, delightful tale of love, acceptance and family.

Young Annie Shearer lives with her family on a farm in the small town of Upson Downs. Her best friend is her dog Runt.

Her adventures with Runt take her to London and the Krumpet Dog Show. (I love the wordplay Silvey uses throughout the story.)

An Australian story that will have you laughing out loud at the antics of everyone, especially Annie's brother Max. You'll be boo-ing at the baddies, there's two, including Fergus Fink.

A pure delight to read for young and old alike.

After a few more serious books for adults Australian author Craig Silvey has given writing middle grade fiction a try. Silvey’s book Jasper Jones is a modern Australian classic in my opinion so I was excited to give this latest book a go. I get such a nostalgia kick from middle grade fiction so I do like to read one every now and then. There's plenty on my TBR! But they are hard to review in amongst my stacks of literary fiction.

In this book Annie Shearer lives in drought stricken Upson Downs with her family and her dog called Runt. With Annie’s farm at risk from a greedy neighbour, Annie and Runt try their luck at an Agility course at the local show and next thing they know they have their sights set on winning the Agility Course Grand Championship at the famous Krumpets Dog Show in London. Runt is incredibly good at the course but freezes up if anyone but Annie watches him so of course there are lots of obstacles and funny moments along the way.

Runt is a feel good wholesome book in the vein of Babe or Charlotte's Web with just a teensy amount of the fantastical or absurd thrown in. It’s aimed at upper primary readers but suitable to be read to younger readers with the storyline safe and a little predictable (as much younger fiction is). Nevertheless it sends some good messages about kindness, always trying your best and never giving up and the importance of family and friends.

I enjoyed reading this and could definitely see its appeal for the younger market and for us adults that like to feel nostalgia for their own childhoods.

Thank you to @allenandunwin for my #gifted copy.

So cute!
This is a story about Annie Shearer who lives on a farm in the small town of Upson Downs, with her mother, father, brother and grandmother, as well as her best friend Runt, a little stray dog which she has taken under her wing. The town is going through a tough time at the moment and the family is dealing with their greedy neighbour. Annie is one who wants to fix anything and everything and wears her grandfather's toolbelt around her waist at all times. One day at the local fair, there is a dog agility competition running and she thinks Runt would be good at it. But the only thing that is stopping them is Runt, only performing for Annie's eyes only and no one else's. The main goal is to travel to London at the Krumpets Dog Show to win the prize money to help save her family's farm.
There were so many nice life lessons and themes in the book and is probably important for young kids to read, as well as adults! It was just really heartwarming and cute, and the characters were all individual and funny in their own little ways.
Overall, it's a story of connection, friendship, family, resilience, acceptance, love, kindness and overcoming the odds and you really wanted to root for Annie and Runt every step of the way.

This middle grade book about an eleven year old girl and her dog is so sweet and heartwarming. Annie Shearer is a girl who likes to fix things and feels a responsibility to try and fix things when her family risk losing their farm. Together with Runt, the stray dog she’s adopted, Annie comes up with a plan to fix everything. A beautiful, quintessentially Aussie tale.

Beautiful masterpiece doesn’t do this gorgeous story justice. Not only does it belong with Danny, Matilda, Fern and Anne it gave me insights like ‘everyone deserves to walk their own path’ ‘maybe she didn’t need to try to fix everything on her own..it was much more fun to be a part of Team Shearer, working together’ ‘he doesn’t need fixing. He’s not broken. He’s just Runt’…all the feels!!! A perfect book for the everyone

I LOVED LOVED LOVED this charming story. In honesty, I have scant idea about target audience and children’s reading age. I only know that I as an adult reader was enraptured from page 1 through to the conclusion. Had this story been read to me as a child, I would be interrupting to laugh, to cry, to ask a million questions, all in the keen urge to learn and fully understand the themes that affect these characters and their small rural town. Craig Silvey, hats off to you for this one. It’s a beauty. And congrats to Illustrator Sara Acton for the most adorable visual representations. 👏👏👏📘

With his first junior novel Craig Silvey has not disappointed. This story is very sweet and beautiful with the overarching theme of love, acceptance and being your true self.
